Juventus vs Sporting CP Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Both Juventus and Sporting Lisbon will look to close the gap at the top of the Champions League group D table when they square off at the Allianz Stadium on Wednesday night. Juventus picked up a hard-fought 2-0 home win over Olympiakos Piraeus last time out in the Champions League, thanks to two second-half goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Mario Mandzukic. Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon suffered a narrow 0-1 home loss against Barcelona, with their defender Sebastian Coates scoring an own-goal just after the break. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Juventus should be able to grab all three points here despite their recent struggle. They have won five of their last six home games across all competitions and they are undefeated in 24 Champions League home fixtures. However, I’m not fancying them to keep a clean sheet here as they have conceded several goals of late, while Sporting have scored at least two goals in six of their last seven away games across all competitions.

Juventus Preview

Juventus won the sixth Scudetto in a row last season, but they looked vulnerable in the early part of the new Serie A campaign. Their recent run of form in the Serie A has seen them draw 2-2 against Atalanta and lose 1-2 at home at the hands of Lazio. This leaves them only in third in the Serie A table tied on 19 points with the 4th-placed Lazio, already five points behind the current leaders SSC Napoli. They were on a five-game unbeaten streak across all competitions prior to their 1-2 home defeat against Lazio at the weekend. The Old Lady kicked off their Champions League campaign with a humiliating 3-0 defeat on the road at Barcelona, but they did well to beat Olympiakos Piraeus on matchday two. They only sit third in the group D table tied on three points with the second-placed and their Wednesday’s opponents Sporting Lisbon. This is Juve’s sixth Champions League group stage campaign in succession and managed to reach the knockout rounds in their last three attempts. Their 2-0 home win over Olympiakos last time out extended Juventus’ unbeaten home run in the Champions League to 24 games. In addition, Juve were on a five-game winning streak this season prior to their 1-2 home loss against Lazio at the weekend. Furthermore, prior to this defeat, Juve managed to keep five clean sheets. Paulo Dybala is a player to watch for Juventus as the Argentine striker has already scored ten goals in his eight league appearances.

Juventus Team News

Marko Pjaca and Mattia De Sciglio are both doubts, while Benedikt Howedes is missing through a thigh injury.

Sporting CP Preview

On the other hand, Sporting Lisbon’s recent form has been poor as they were on a four-game winless streak across all competitions prior to their 2-4 away win at Oleiros in the Taca de Portugal last week. Prior to this victory, Olympiakos managed a hard-fought 0-0 draw against FC Porto in the Primeira Liga. They had a strong start to the Primeira Liga season and currently sit in second in the standings with 20 points after eight games, just two points adrift of the current leaders Porto. Regarding their Champions League campaign, Sporting managed an impressive 2-3 away victory at Olympiakos Piraeus on the opening round, but succumbed to a disappointing 0-1 home loss against Barcelona on matchday two, with Sebastian Coates scoring an own-goal. Sporting Lisbon can count on their recent away form as they are undefeated in six games at the moment, scoring at least two goals in five of these. The Portuguese club are in the group stage of the competition for a third time in four years, although they finished bottom of the group table last season in a group alongside Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid and Legia Warszawa. Bruno Fernandes and Bas Dost have been Sporting’ most prolific players in the early part of their Primeira Liga campaign, as the pair bagged nine goals between them.

Sporting CP Team News

Adrien Silva, Fabio Coentrao and Seydou Doumbia are all doubts ahead of this trip.
