Juventus vs Lazio Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Juventus will take on Lazio in the Italian Super Cup on Sunday night, with both teams looking for their first piece of silverware of the season. Juventus did the domestic double last season, but because it was Lazio who reached the final of the Coppa Italia, then it’s they who they will take on the Old Lady this weekend. Juventus enter the fray on the back of a 2-0 defeat on the road at Tottenham Hotspur in a friendly fixture last weekend. On the flip side, Lazio picked up a 0-1 victory on the road at Malaga in a friendly game last Saturday. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

I’m backing Juventus to continue their dominance over Lazio and to pick up another victory here as I think that Lazio have a weaker squad than the previous season after the departure of their captain Lucas Biglia. Juve have won each of the last ten meetings with Lazio across all competitions and have kept a clean sheet in nine of these.

Juventus Preview

Juventus have been dominating Italian football over the past five years as they have won six Serie A titles in a row along with three consecutive Coppa Italia trophies. However, they have lost two of the last three Super Cups, including last year’s 3-4 penalty-shootout defeat at the hands of AC Milan. Juventus haven’t enjoyed a prolific pre-season campaign as they have only won one of their five friendlies in regular time. Juventus have been very active throughout this summer transfer window as they have sold no more than nine players for a total fee of €122.8 million. Their most notable departure is obviously Leonardo Bonucci as he left the club after seven years to join AC Milan. However, they also brought in seven new players in the shape of Federico Bernardeschi, Medhi Benatia, Wojciech Szczesny, Mattia De Sciglio, Rodrigo Betancur, Douglas Costa and Dario Del Fabro. Juventus met Lazio three times last term and have won each of those games without conceding a single goal. Actually, Juve are undefeated in their last 14 meetings with Lazio across all competitions since a 2-1 loss in the Coppa Italia back in 2013. The interesting fact is that Juve’s last two victories in the Super cup have both come against Lazio.

Juventus Team News

Juan Cuadrado and Wojciech Szczęsny are both doubts, but Stefano Sturaro and Marko Pjaca are both back in training.

Lazio Preview

On the contrary, Lazio have enjoyed an excellent pre-season campaign, winning all of their four friendlies. The Biancocelesti’s back line looked impressive this term as they allowed just one goal in four games. Lazio finished in a respectable 5th spot in the Serie A table last term, which means they will be playing in the Europa League group stage this season. Lazio have made some interesting transfers this summer as they have sold their former captain Lucas Biglia to AC Milan for €17m and Etrit Berisha to Atalanta for €5m, while they brought in Adam Marusic from Ostende for €6.5m, Lucas Leiva from Liverpool for €5.7m, Felipe Caicedo from Espanyol for €2.5m and Simone Palombi from Ternana for €300,000. Despite the departure of Lucas Biglia, Lazio still have a strong squad with the likes of Ciro Immobile, Felipe Anderson, Lulic and De Vrij. Regarding their Super Cup history, Lazio finished as runner-ups in the last two appearances and the last time when they managed to win the trophy was in 2009/10 when they beat Inter Milan. The bad news is that Lazio were beaten three times in a row by Juventus last term and their last time when they managed to beat Juve was four years ago in a Coppa Italia fixture.

Lazio Team News

Wesley Hoedt, Stefan Daniel Radu, Wallace and Federico Marchetti are all doubts, while Felipe Anderson is out through a groin injury.
