Istanbul Basaksehir vs Sevilla Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Basaksehir will be looking to book their place into the Champions League group stage when they welcome Sevilla at the Basaksehir Fatih Terim Stadyumu on Wednesday night for the first leg of their play-off tie. Basaksehir come into this tie on the back of a narrow 1-0 home win over Bursaspor in the first round of the Super Lig season at the weekend thanks to a first-half goal from Eljero Elia. Meanwhile, Sevilla managed to beat Roma 2-1 in a friendly fixture a few days ago thanks to goals from Sergio Escudero and Nolito. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

In terms of quality, Sevilla hold the upper hand in this, particularly after their summer transfers. However, Basaksehir have been a tough nut to crack at home over the past year and they also have some experienced players within their squad. It’s the first leg of the tie, so I’m expecting Basaksehir to maximise their home advantage and to take an early lead in this tie.

Istanbul Basaksehir Preview

Basaksehir looked incredibly strong in the Turkish Super Lig last season as they finished as runner-ups to Besiktas to book their place in the Champions League qualifiers. Furthermore, Basaksehir managed to reach the Turkish Cup final last term, losing 1-4 on penalties at the hands of Konyaspor. Actually, that was Basaksehir’s only defeat in the last 17 games across all competitions. The Turkish team have only played two friendlies in pre-season, but they looked solid in their two-legged clash against Club Brugge in the Champions League third qualifying round. They fought back from two goals down to a secure a 3-3 away draw in Belgium in the first leg and followed this up with a comfortable 2-0 home win in the second leg. In addition, they kicked off the new Turkish Super Lig campaign brightly, winning 1-0 at home over Bursaspor last Friday. Basaksehir made some decent transfers this summer as they brought in Gokhan Inler, Gael Clichy and Mevlut Erdinc on free transfers along with Eljero Elia from Feyenoord and Kerim Frei from Birmingham for a total fee of €2.6 million. They already had two experienced players within their squad before these summer arrivals, as Emmanuel Adebayor and Marcio Mossoro have both played a crucial role in Basaksehir’s performance last season. Basaksehir can definitely count on their home form ahead of this clash as they are currently on a 24-game unbeaten streak across all competitions.

Istanbul Basaksehir Team News

Mehmet Batdal is definitely out through injury, while Aurelien Chedjou is a doubt.

Sevilla Preview

Sevilla have been one of the most successful teams in Europe over the past three years, as they won the Europa League trophy three times in a row between 2014 to 2016. They also looked decent in the Champions League last season as they reached the round of 16 where they were beaten 3-2 on aggregate by the Premier League side Leicester City. Furthermore, Sevilla managed to finish in a respectable 4th spot in La Liga table last season, six points off third-placed Atletico Madrid. Los Rojiblancos have undergone several changes in personnel over the summer as their former coach Jorge Sampaoli took the Argentina national team job and he was replaced by Eduardo Berizzo. Furthermore, Vitolo, Vicente Iborra, Adil Rami and Mariano have all left the club for a total fee of €61 million, while Luciano Vietto has returned to his club Atletico Madrid after his loan spell. However, Sevilla did a great job in bringing back Jesus Navas and Ever Banega, along with Nolito from Manchester City and Luis Muriel from Sampdoria in attack. In addition, Fenerbahce’s defender Simon Kjaer and Lille’s right back Sebastien Corchia have also joined the team for a total fee of €17.5m. Sevilla have only lost twice in seven friendlies in pre-season, but their away record in the Champions League over the past few years has been awful. Sevilla have only won once in their last nine away games in the Champions League and have failed to score in the most recent two of these.

Sevilla Team News

Daniel Carrico is a doubt, but Pablo Sarabia, Franco Vazquez, Gabriel Ivan Mercado and Joaquin Correa are all back in training.
