Ireland vs Uruguay Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Ireland and Uruguay go head-to-head on Sunday evening in an International Friendly with both sides looking to get back to winning ways. Ireland were thrashed 3-1 by Mexico in a friendly fixture last night, with their consolation goal being scored by Stephen Gleeson with 15 minutes to go. Meanwhile, Uruguay’s most recent fixture ended as a 2-1 loss at Peru in a World Cup qualifier back in March. Carlos Sanchez gave Uruguay the lead in the game, but the hosts leveled the game four minutes later and added another one in the second half. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Uruguay are the strongest team on paper, but I’m expecting them to play with a weaker side here as they will face Italy next Wednesday. Furthermore, Uruguay have been awful on the road over the past few months as they are winless in the last seven away fixtures. On the flip side, Ireland have been a tough nut to crack on home soil over the past three years, losing just four of their last 20 home fixtures across all competitions.

Ireland Preview

Ireland have enjoyed an impressive World Cup qualifying campaign, but they looked awful in their most recent friendlies. They were beaten 0-1 at home by Iceland three months ago, and followed this up with a 3-1 defeat against Mexico in their most friendly fixture. Martin O’Neill’s men find themselves in the World Cup qualifying group D table tied on 11 points with the current leaders Serbia. They have won three and draw two of their five group fixtures, while conceding just three goals. Actually, Ireland have kept four clean sheets in their last eight games across all competitions. On home soil, Ireland have only lost twice in their last 18 home fixtures across all competitions. They were on a four-game unbeaten streak prior to their 0-1 loss against Iceland in their most recent home fixture. Coach Martin O’Neill few key players against Mexico last night, which means that is likely to rotate the squad and hand debuts to Matt Doherty, Kevin Long, Liam Kelly or Adam Rooney. Head-to-head, Ireland suffered a 2-3 home against Uruguay in a friendly fixture back in March 2011.

Ireland Team News

Ireland have no fresh injury concerns ahead of this clash, but we might see more regulars here than in the previous game against Mexico.

Uruguay Preview

Uruguay, on the other hand, have a bigger profile friendly next Wednesday when they face Italy, so they will probably play a weaker side here. Uruguay’s form over the past six months has been awful as they have lost each of their last three World Cup qualifiers. The most worrying fact is that La Celeste have conceded at least two goals in each of their last three fixtures. Despite the recent struggle, Uruguay still sit in third in the standings tied on 23 points with the 4th-placed Chile. The Uruguayans have been scoring goals for fun throughout their World Cup qualifying campaign, as they hold the best offensive record in the group with 26 goals in 14 rounds. Edinson Cavani is the qualifying campaign’s topscorer at the moment with nine goals under his belt, while Diego Godin and Luis Suarez have scored three goals each. The latter is just two goal away from reaching the half-century mark at International level. The bad news is that Uruguay are winless in their last seven away games across all competitions, conceding at least two goals in six of these.

Uruguay Team News

Luis Suarez is the only injury absentee for Uruguay ahead of this clash.
