Ireland vs Denmark Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Republic of Ireland welcome Denmark at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Thursday night for the second leg of their World Cup qualifying play-offs, with both teams looking to seal their place in Russia next year. The first leg ended as a nil-nil draw, although the hosts had an overwhelming 68% ball possession and over ten goalscoring opportunities. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview. Feel free to visit our Bet of the day page to check our best daily tips.

Betting Predictions and Tips

It’s difficult to predict the winner here after the first-leg result where Denmark should have won the game. With both teams in poor goalscoring shape at the moment, I’m not expecting too many goals here. Furthermore, I don’t think that it would be goals at both ends of the field in this one.

Ireland Preview

It wasn’t the best football display from Ireland last week, but they did well to secure a goalless draw and they are now just 90 minutes away to book their place at the World Cup 2018. It was Ireland’s third clean sheet in a row since they lost 0-1 at home at the hands of Serbia two months ago. They have the home advantage, but Denmark have a better team overall. At home, the Irish have only lost two of their last nine games across all competitions and were winless in two games prior to their 2-0 win over Moldova in their most recent home fixture. The good news is that Ireland are undefeated in their last two home meetings with Denmark across all competitions, conceding just once in the process. The Irish looked good at the back throughout their World Cup qualifying campaign, but they will need to sharpen up in the final third if they are to qualify for the World Cup finals. Darryl Murphy or Shane Long will be leading Ireland’s attacking line, although the latter is going through a huge goal drought at the moment. Ireland have only scored 12 goals throughout their World Cup qualifying group D, including four from their topscorer James McClean.

Ireland Team News

Sean Maguire, David McGoldrick, Jonny Hayes, James McCarthy and Richard Keogh are all missing through injury, but David Meyler could play as he returns from suspension.

Denmark Preview

On the other hand, Denmark were unable to find the winner last week despite dominating the game in terms of possession and goalscoring opportunities. The good news is that the Danes are still undefeated in ten games across all competitions at the moment, although five of these have ended in draws. Similar to their Thursday’s opponents, Denmark have struggled to find the back of the net recently as they only managed two goals in their last three qualifiers. Away from home, the Danes are undefeated in their last five games across all competitions, allowing just three goals in the process. The bad news is that Denmark have only won once in their six visits to Ireland and have failed to score in two of these. Pione Sisto, Nicolai Jorgensen and Andreas Cornelius led the attacking line in the first leg, but Tottenham’s midfielder Christian Eriksen is without a doubt their biggest threat. He has been in terrific shape throughout the group stage of this qualifying campaign, helping the team with eight goals and three assists. The worrying fact is that Denmark have failed to score a single goal in their last three meetings with the Irish, while conceding seven in the process.

Denmark Team News

Kasper Dolberg is the only notable absentee for Denmark ahead of this tie.
