Ireland vs Austria Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Ireland will look to close the gap at the top of the World Cup qualifying group D table when they welcome Austria at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Ireland were held to a goalless home draw by their rivals Wales last time out, despite the fact that they had more goalscoring opportunities than their opponents. Meanwhile, Austria won 2-0 at home over Moldova thanks to two second-half goals from Marko Arnautovic and Martin Harnik. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Ireland is the in-form team in this clash, but Austria proved to be a tough nut to crack on the road over the past two years. Furthermore, Austria are undefeated in their last three visits to Ireland, scoring at least two goals in each of these. The reverse fixture has ended with just one goal scored, but I think that we should see some goals here as both sides are in dire need of three points.

Ireland Preview

The Republic of Ireland made a strong start into their World Cup qualifying campaign, having won three and draw two of their opening five group fixtures. The Irish were on a three-game winning streak prior to their nil-nil home draw against their rivals Wales in their most recent group game. This leaves Ireland in second spot in the group D table tied on eleven points with the current leaders Serbia. Furthermore, they hold a four point advantage over the 3rd-placed Wales and 4th-placed Austria. Coach Martin O’Neill did a good job since his arrival back in 2013 and has already got Ireland to the European Championship last year, losing in the round of 16 at the hands of Italy. O’Neill named a very inexperienced squad for their trip to Mexico a week ago and suffered a 3-1 defeat. However, may of their key players returned to action a few days ago when they managed an impressive 3-1 home victory over Uruguay. Their record since the Euro 2016 reads five wins, two draws and two defeats in nine games across all competitions. On home soil, Ireland have only lost three games in the last two years and all of those defeats came in friendly fixtures. Ireland’s topscorer throughout this World Cup qualifying campaign is James McClean with three goals under his belt.

Ireland Team News

Jonathan Walters sat out training just four days before the game because of a knee problem picked up earlier in the week. Furthermore, David McGoldrick has already left the camp, also with a knee injury to join Shane Long on the injury list.

Austria Preview

Austria’s performance at the Euro 2016 has been awful as they were knocked out from the group stage, finishing bottom of the group F table with just one point to their name after three group fixtures. They kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign in a similar manner, winning just two of their five group games. Actually, they were on a three-game winless streak prior to their hard-fought 2-0 home win over Moldova in the previous round. Conceding has been Austria’s main issue throughout this qualifying campaign as they allowed seven goals in five games, which is the third worst defensive record in the group. The Austrians currently sit in 4th spot in the standings tied on seven points with the 3rd-placed Wales, already four points behind the joint-leaders Ireland and Serbia. This means that their hopes aren’t quite so great, especially as they only managed to beat minnows Moldova and Georgia in this campaign. The good news is that Austria have been a strong side on the road over the past two years, winning eight of their last nine games across all competitions. Marko Arnautovic is Austria’s topscorer throughout this qualifying campaign with three goals under his belt, but he got injured in the final round of the Premier League season and he is still on the sidelines.

Austria Team News

Marko Arnautovic is missing through injury, but Guido Burgstaller has enjoyed an incredible season with Schalke 04 and he should be able to replace Arnautovic.
