Ipswich Town vs West Bromwich Albion Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Friday evening (19:45) fixture is live on Sky Sports and features two sides at opposite ends of the table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Ipswich made it back-to-back draws with a 2-2 result at Reading as they were twice being pegged back from ahead and had to settle for a point. Gwion Edwards and Freddie Sears got the goals but a draw was a fair result from a fairly even contest.

West Brom bounced back from a four-game winless run with a comprehensive 4-1 home victory over Leeds. The goals were shared around the team with one each for Hal Robson-Kanu, Matt Phillips, Harvey Barnes and Dwight Gayle.

The last time these sides met was in the 2009/10 season so it is hard to read much into the head-to-heads. For what it is worth the team hosting the fixture has won five of their last six meetings.

Betting Tips and Predictions

A 4-1 defeat of Leeds has changed the mood amongst West Brom fans but I would still not be rushing to back them here given they have won just two on the road all season. Ipswich are winless at home but six of these have ended all-square and they have shown a few signs of life under Paul Lambert with two successive draws.

Backing both teams to score looks the safer play as this happened in the last two for Town while the Baggies carry so much of a goal threat you imagine a side who can hit four against Leeds are capable of netting here.

Freddie Sears has two in two and is most likely on penalties so at these odds offers a good bet to score at any time.

YES in the both teams to score market

Ipswich Town Preview

It is five without a win for Town but draws in their previous two under new boss Paul Lambert means they are not without hope. They need to start picking up points as they are five points adrift at the bottom of the table though the expected goals data feels this is harsh and has them in 21st.

At Portman Road, they are still seeking their first victory this season in the league though six of the eight have finished all-square. None of the last seven the Suffolk side have played in front of their own fans has gone over 2.5 goals.

The 14 goals that Ipswich have scored in the Championship this campaign are the joint-second lowest (Bolton only have 11).  The 28 goals they have conceded is the fifth worst defensive record in the division.

Ipswich Town Team News

Myles Kenlock (hamstring) and Jon Nolan (dead leg) are doubts while Ellis Harrison (ankle), Jon Walters (Achilles) and Emyr Huws (knee) are long-term absentees. Teddy Bishop (also hamstring) is back in training but this game will likely come too soon for him.

West Bromwich Albion Preview

A 4-1 victory last time out has given the Baggies new hope after a strong start was followed by four without a win before the defeat of Leeds. They sit in fifth place though the expected goals data has them over-achieving and down in 11th.

Away from the Hawthorns, it has been a struggle winning just two of their eight and losing their last two. The Black Country outfit have a decent return of 12 goals on the road though they have blanked on their last two.

No side have scored more goals in the Championship than West Brom who have netted 37 times which is eight more than their nearest rivals Leeds. Their defence is an issue though with the 25 they have conceded more goals than three of the sides in the bottom six.

West Bromwich Albion Team News

Harvey Barnes (foot), Kyle Bartley (knee) and Chris Brunt (hamstring) are doubts ahead of this fixture.
