Ipswich Town vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Ipswich suffered their second successive defeat and fifth in the last six as they went down 2-1 at Aston Villa. A Freddie Sears goal 15 minutes from time brought them back into it but they could not find a further breakthrough and went on to lose 2-1.

Sheffield Wednesday will begin the Steve Bruce era hoping to build on a 1-0 victory over Wigan last time out in the Championship thanks to a Steven Fletcher goal.  In the FA Cup, they were eliminated 3-0 by Premier League side Chelsea.

The reverse fixture came on August 25th and Wednesday won that 2-1 thanks to a Lucas Joao brace while Aristote Nsiala netted one and was dismissed for Town.  It ended a run of five straight meetings where the home side had failed to win.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Sheffield Wednesday are the slight favourites to win this game and while I think they are the most likely winners Ipswich are doing better things at home than away and with just one loss in their last four at Portman Road I would look elsewhere for the value.

Yes in the both teams to score market appeals as the hosts have netted in each of their last seven at their place while Wednesday have bagged at least once in four of their last five on the road.

Nobody expects this to be a high-scoring game but three of the last six at Portman Road have gone over while another one was close with two goals.  Wednesday meanwhile have Fernando Forestieri and Lucas Joao back which will make a huge difference to their attacking threat.

Ipswich Town Preview

The Tractor Boys have taken just three points from their last six and find themselves bottom of the table as they have spent most of the season. They are five points off Bolton in 23rd and seven off Rotherham in 21st.

At Portman Road, the Suffolk outfit have lost just one of their last four including victories over Rotherham and Wigan and a draw with Sheffield United. They have managed to net at least once in each of their last seven in front of their own fans.

Each of the last two Ipswich have played and four of their last six have produced two or three goals. Four of the last six goals that they have scored in the Championship came in the first-half.

Ipswich Town Team News

Jack Lankester (back), Emyr Huws (knee), Jon Walters, Tom Adeyemi (both Achilles) and Tayo Edun (eye) are long-term absentees while Grant Ward (cruciate) has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls have won just one of their last six in the league and Steve Bruce inherits a side neither in the relegation mix nor in the play-off hunt. They sit 17th and will look to take advantage of a run that sees their next four against teams in the bottom six.

Away from Hillsborough, the Yorkshire unit have won just one of their last eight but that did come at Middlesbrough. They have kept a clean sheet on just two occasions on the road this season.

Sheffield Wednesday have seen a combined total of just ten goals from their last six Championship fixtures. Three of the last four goals they have netted have come in the first-half.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Matt Penney (shoulder) is set to miss the next few weeks while Kieran Lee (knee) and Gary Hooper (groin) are long-term absentees.  Rolando Arrons, Achraf Lazaar and Dominic Iorfa will be added to the squad after deadline day moves.
