Ipswich Town vs Sheffield United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in the top-half of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Ipswich made it back-to-back victories as they won 2-1 away to Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night. Town had Martyn Waghorn to thank as he grabbed a brace to help them shade a closely fought encounter. Sheffield United had no answer for the flying Fulham going down 3-0 at Craven Cottage on Tuesday evening. Chris Wilder was not too disheartened by the result highlighting just how far the Blades have come in the last few seasons instead. The reverse fixture came in mid-October at Bramall Lane with Chris Basham netting the only goal to give United the victory. The Yorkshire outfit also won here in the FA Cup in January thanks to a Nathan Thomas goal.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Despite two 1-0 victories over Ipswich this season I cannot be siding with Sheffield United at shorter odds. Ipswich have lost just one of their last ten and finding them in the draw no bet market at evens appeals especially considering Martyn Waghorn looked back to his best in midweek grabbing a brace. We talked about Martyn Waghorn grabbing a brace in midweek and Mick McCarthy spoke after the game about the difference in character you could see from the player after the first goal went it. He tends to score in batches when he is firing so take him to be first goalscorer with the each-way option.

Ipswich Town Preview

It is just one defeat in their last six for the Tractor Boys and two in the last ten as they keep alive their play-off hopes. They sit seven points behind Middlesbrough in sixth though none of their next eight are against a top six side. At Portman Road, they have struggled of late winning just one of their last six and being held to goalless draws by QPR and Burton. Their last six in front of their own fans have produced a total of just six goals with Town scoring just two of these. Martyn Waghorn grabbed a brace in the last game to put to an end a 14-game goalless run having netted eight in his first 15 matches. Of the 40 goals scored at Portman Road this season only 17 have come in the first 45 minutes.

Ipswich Town Team News

Mustapha Carayol (unknown) and Tristan Nydam (fitness) are rated doubtful. Tom Adeyemi, Teddy Bishop (both hamstring), Dean Gerken (hip), Emyr Huws and Andre Dozzell (both knee) are long-term absentees. David McGoldrick (groin) is unlikely to feature again this season.

Sheffield United Preview

The Blades continued their recent struggles as they have lost four of their last seven and have dropped down to ninth. They are three points outside the play-offs and must take advantage of their next three where none of their opponents are above them. Away from Bramall Lane, they have lost three of their last four blanking in all these defeats. 30 of the 49 goals they have been involved in on the road have come in the opening 45 minutes. Four of the last five Sheffield United have played have gone over 2.5 goals with three of these seeing both teams find the back of the net. Their two meetings with Ipswich this season have ended 1-0.

Sheffield United Team News

Leon Clarke (unknown) and James Wilson (ankle) are doubts while Paul Coutts (broken leg) is out for the season
