Ipswich Town vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

Ipswich Town v Birmingham City Predictions & Betting Tips

This Saturday afternoon game (15:00) features two sides who have been out of the Premier League for a while and are looking to make a return. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Bookmakers have these sides down for different seasons if the outright markets are anything to go by. Ipswich with a low budget and a quiet transfer market are anticipated to struggle while Birmingham are expected to do well under Harry Redknapp. It was the Midlands side who came out on top in their meetings last season winning their home game 2-1 and then drawing 1-1 at Portman Road. Jonathan Grounds got their goal for the Blues that day while Grant Ward netted for the Suffolk outfit.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Birmingham might be on for the better season but they do not scream value here with a slight leaning for Ipswich but in general I would avoid the match markets. The statistics all suggest going under in terms of goals but I would consider a little play on over 2.5 goals. Redknapp will want to open Birmingham up and their under goals last season might not be reflective of them this season while Ipswich might just go for it in the first few months themselves. Season ticket sales have been low at Portman Road and they need to give a sign of being a team worth watching.

Ipswich Town Preview

Ipswich finished 16th last season as they briefly flirted with relegation but had enough to stay up. Mick McCarthy is the man in charge and his presence splits opinion with some fans grateful that he keeps them as a solid Championship side while others feel the club has stagnated under his charge. Joe Garner at centre-forward and Tom Adeyemi in centre-midfield are the key additions to the side in what has been a largely quiet summer. They have not lost any of their key players though Tom Lawrence going back to Leicester from his loan is a loss. The Suffolk side were not one for the neutral last season as they ranked 20th in the goals market with an average of just 2.3 goals per game. Five of their games last season ended goalless which was the joint second-highest in the division.

Birmingham City Preview

It was a tough season for Birmingham last time out as they slid dangerously down the league table before finishing in 19th. Harry Redknapp has been convinced to stay on for a season after he kept them in the league after the disaster of a spell from Gianfranco Zola. As you can imagine under Redknapp it has been a busy summer for the Blues with Marc Roberts, Craig Gardner and David Stockdale the most notable names of their new signings. They have so far managed to keep a hold of most of their better players with Kerim Frei among the only real names to have departed. The biggest issue for them last season was lack of goals with only relegated Wigan and Rotherham going under their tally. Each of their last five and nine of the last 11 have gone under 2.5 goals.
