By Marius Hrebenciuc

Portugal will look to close the gap at the top of the World Cup qualifying group B table when they travel to the Groupama Arena to take on Hungary. Hungary won 3-1 at home over Latvia on Thursday thanks to goals from Tamas Kadar, Adam Szalai, and Balasz Dsudzsak. On the flip side, Portugal beat the Faroe Islands 5-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo and two other goals from William Carvalho and Nelson Oliveira. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Hungary Preview

Hungary finally got back to winning ways on Thursday as they managed to beat Latvia 3-1 at home. Prior to this victory, the Hungarians were on a four-game losing run across all competitions, having failed to score a single goal in the process. They still sit in third spot in the group B table, eight points behind the second-placed Portugal. Overall, it has been a disappointing qualifying campaign for Hungary, particularly after their fine performances at Euro 2016. Actually, we all remember when these two sides met in their final group fixture at the Euro 2016 in a game which ended as a 3-3 draw. At home, Hungary have endured a mixed run of form over the past two years, registering three wins, four defeats and three draws in their last ten home games across all competitions. The good news is that Hungary have won their last two home qualifiers, scoring at least three goals in each of these. However, they are winless in their three home meetings with Portugal across all competitions, conceding three goals in two of these. Adam Szalai is definitely a player to watch here as he is the team’s top scorer with five goals under his belt, including one against Latvia on Thursday.

Hungary Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for Hungary ahead of this clash.

Portugal Preview

After finishing in third spot at the Confederations Cup, Portugal managed to pick up a comfortable 5-1 home win over the Faroe Islands in the World Cup qualifying on Thursday night. Cristiano Ronaldo put in another superb display last night as he scored a hat-trick to increase his tally to 14 goals in this qualifying campaign. Portugal’s form since winning Euro 2016 last summer has seen them lose just three of their last 15 games across all competitions. They kicked off this World Cup qualifying campaign with a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Switzerland, but managed to win the other six group fixtures. The Portuguese find themselves in second spot in the group B table with 18 points under their belts after seven rounds, just three points behind the current leaders Switzerland. Away from home, Portugal have picked up victories in each of their last four games across all competitions, scoring at least three goals in three of these. Head-to-head, Portugal are undefeated in their seven meetings with Hungary across all competitions, scoring three goals in six of these. Cristiano Ronaldo is the team’s ttop scorerthroughout this qualifying campaign with 14 goals under his belt, while Andres Silva has scored six.

Portugal Team News

Pedro Amaral has been called up to replace the injured Yuri Ribeiro, while Bruno Fernandes will replace Pizzi, as he is also missing through injury.
