Hull City vs Burnley Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Hull City take on Burnley at the KCOM Stadium on 25/02/17 in a meeting of two promoted sides who have fared contrastingly in the Premier League thus far. Hull battled bravely but ultimately fell short as they lost 2-0 away to Arsenal last time out, with luck simply not on their side. Burnley meanwhile were victims of the weekend’s biggest FA Cup shock, losing 1-0 at home to National League leaders Lincoln City. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This is a game both teams will feel they need to win, albeit for different reasons. Hull could escape the bottom three with a victory, while Burnley will be desperate to bounce back from their embarrassing exit from the FA Cup last weekend. Despite this, I’m expecting the home side to come away from this one with the three points after a real improvement under Marco Silva since he took over.

Hull Preview

Hull will have taken real heart from their performance away at Arsenal last time out, staying right in a contest until the closing minutes where luck failed to prevail on their side. Alexis Sanchez unsurprisingly broke the deadlock with the aid of his hand, while Kieran Gibbs escaped a red card when he brought down Lazar Markovic, who appeared to be through on goal. Sam Clucas then saw red for Hull in stoppage time, giving away a penalty in the process, which Sanchez converted to see Arsenal come away with a 2-0 win and three points. For Hull, it was yet another encouraging performance under Marco Silva, who has guided his team to within just a point of safety after seeing a real turnaround under his stewardship. They managed to take an extremely impressive four points from a possible nine against Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal - keeping clean sheets in two of those fixtures - and now have a more favourable run of games to look forward to, starting with this one. Hull have lost just once in their last seven Premier League games at home, with Manchester City the only side to come away from the KCOM with three points since November 6. In all competitions, they have won four on the bounce at home and will see Burnley’s away form as an opportunity to make it five wins in a row.

Burnley Preview

Burnley faced arguably the biggest shock of the FA Cup so far this season, losing 1-0 at home to Lincoln City at the weekend. Having held runaway Premier League leaders Chelsea to a 1-1 draw in their previous outing, few expected them to have issues against a side top of a division four levels beneath themselves. However, Burnley couldn’t find the breakthrough and were made to pay in the 89th minute as Sean Raggett headed the non-league outfit into a dream quarter-final tie away to Arsenal. Joey Barton was unsurprisingly at the head of the controversy, as he attempted to get Lincoln forward Matt Rhead sent off and found himself embarrassed for doing so. Currently ten points clear of the relegation zone, Burnley have been excellent so far this season, although they will feel they need to get a few more points on the board away from home if they are to completely guarantee themselves a place in the league next season and reach the magic total of forty points. The Clarets were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Hull in the reverse fixture, as a 95th minute Robert Snodgrass free-kick saw Mike Phelan’s team snatch a point. Both teams have come a long way since and in truth Burnley would probably take the same result as them if it were offered to them now.

Hull Team News

Michael Dawson (calf), Curtis Davies (hamstring), Moses Odubajo (knee), Ryan Mason (skull fracture), Markus Henriksen (shoulder), Abel Hernandez (hamstring) and Will Keane (cruciate ligament) feature on a lengthy Hull injury list. Dieumerci Mbokani (virus) will hope to return.

Burnley Team News

Midfielder Jeff Hendrick remains suspended and misses out here, as do Steven Defour (hamstring) and Dean Marney (cruciate ligament) so Joey Barton and Ashley Westwood should start. Kevin Long (knee) and Johann Berg Gudmundsson (ankle) are doubts.
