Huddersfield Town vs Southampton Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Huddersfield Town welcome Southampton to the John Smith’s Stadium on 26/08/17 with both teams coming into the fixture off the back of victories last weekend. Huddersfield beat fellow promoted side Newcastle 1-0 in their first home game of the season, as Southampton left it late to beat West Ham 3-2 at home. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Both teams will be full of confidence after completing home victories last weekend, but this will be Huddersfield’s sternest test they have faced in their short Premier League lives. As a result, I’m expecting Southampton to come away with the win, having got their first victory under Mauricio Pellegrino at the weekend.

Huddersfield Town Preview

Second in the table, four goals scored, no goals conceded and two wins from two - not a bad start to life in the Premier League for Huddersfield Town. Newcastle may have finished nine thirteen points clear of Huddersfield in the Championship last season but, if Sunday’s evidence is anything to go by, they have since leapfrogged Rafa Benitez’s side through their recruitment process over the summer. Aaron Mooy scored the game’s only goal with the outstanding moment of quality, exchanging passes with Elliot Kachunga before bending the ball out of the reach of Rob Elliot in the Newcastle goal inside the far post. Sunday was a huge occasion for the club, with it being the first home match Huddersfield have played in the top flight since April 1972 - the result on that day being a 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers. With the sense of occasion surrounding their games turning more into run-of-the-mill occurrences in the weeks to come, the club must now begin to deal with the pressure and challenges of life in the Premier League week-in-week-out. After ending last season without a win in their last three home games, Wagner will be relieved his side have got off the mark early.

Huddersfield Town Team News

Martin Crainie (hip), Jon Gorenc-Stankovic (cruciate ligament), Jonathan Hogg and Nahki Wells (both ankle) are all unavailable for the Terriers through injury.

Southampton Preview

Southampton fans were gifted something of a rarity over the past twelve months - an exciting home game, after seeing their side defeat West Ham 3-2 at St. Mary’s last weekend. Manolo Gabbiadini’s excellent movement and finish gave Saints the lead and Marko Arnautovic’s red card further helped their cause, with the result looking inevitable once Dusan Tadic converted from the penalty spot. However, a poacher’s double from Javier Hernandez stunned the hosts, only for Charlie Austin to coolly convert a 93rd minute penalty after Pablo Zabaleta fouled in the area. Last season, the Saints scored just seventeen goals in their nineteen home games, taking twenty-four points in the process which was the fourth-worst total in the division. Added to that, they scored more than twice in a game on just three occasions at St.Mary’s and failed to net in six home games before Saturday’s win. Four points from a possible six can be considered a decent start by the team as they look to secure yet another top-ten finish in the Premier League. Defender Wesley Hoedt is an impending arrival from Lazio, a move which could finally allow Virgil van Dijk to leave this window, with some of the Premier League’s big boys still interested in signing him.

Southampton Team News

Virgil van Dijk is still missing for the Saints after being made to train away for the first team. Charlie Austin will be pushing for a start after coming to the bench to net the winner at home last weekend.
