Huddersfield Town vs Reading Match Prediction

By Gary Gillles

Huddersfield qualified for the play-offs by finishing in fifth and then going through on penalties from their semi-final with Sheffield Wednesday. Reading ended the regular season in third place and then saw off Fulham 2-1 on aggregate to book their place in the final at Wembley. The two meetings between these two this season both ended in 1-0 victories for the home side. The game at Reading came first in September and was settled by a Roy Beerens goal with the Terriers having Rajiv van La Parra sent-off in the 26th minute. The reverse fixture came in February and Huddersfield won that one 1-0 thanks to an 82nd minute effort from Philip Billing.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bookmakers make Huddersfield the favourites to win the game and this is probably fair as they were the stronger side over the 46 game season with Reading finishing third but never looking like challenging the top two while the Terriers were doing so. I would leave the match markets alone and look elsewhere for my bets. The League One play-off final showed how cagey these Wembley games can be and this could be no exception between two side who produced a total of just five goals in their semi-final matches all of which came in the second-half. Take the game to be level at half-time and considering both side have scored around 60% of their goals in the final 45 minutes take this half to be the highest scoring.

Huddersfield Town Preview

It is now four without a victory in 90 minutes for Town and just three in their last 12 fixtures. Away from their own ground, it is just one win in their last nine though they did have the fourth best away record in the Championship this season. Lack of goals has probably been the biggest problem for Huddersfield this season with just the 14th largest amount of goals and the joint ninth best ranked defence. Just one of their last five has gone over 2.5 goals but the three previous all went over. Elias Kachunga was their top scorer this season with 12 goals followed by Nahki Wells who netted ten times. Around 60% of the goals the Terriers have scored this season have come in the second-half.

Huddersfield Town Team News

Philip Billing (knee), Kasey Palmer (hamstring) and Jon Gorenc Stankovic (knee) are all rated doubtful for this game.

Reading Preview

It is now four without defeat for the Royals and just two defeats from their last 11. Away from their own ground, it has been a mixed bag with three victories, one draw and two defeats from the previous six. Scoring goals has not been a problem for Reading this season finishing with the sixth best ranked attack though the defence was a struggle ranking joint 15th. Just one of their last four has gone over 2.5 goals though the five before that did. Yann Kermorgant is the top Reading scorer this season with 19 goals and the Frenchman has ten in the last 11 games. Around 60% of the league goals the Berkshire side scored this season came in the second-half.

Reading Team News

Jordan Obta (ankle), Tennai Watson (unknown) Callum Harriott (hamstring) are injury concerns while Paul McShane will miss the game through suspension.
