Huddersfield Town vs Newcastle United Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Huddersfield Town face Newcastle United at the John Smith’s Stadium on 20/08/17 as two promoted sides meet on the second weekend of the new Premier League season. Both had contrasting opening days, with Huddersfield coming out 3-0 winners at Crystal Palace, whereas Rafa Benitez saw his side beaten 2-0 at home to Tottenham. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Rafa Benitez will understand the importance of not falling to two early defeats, and I can see that being reflected in the way they set up for the game. Newcastle romped to a 3-1 win at Huddersfield last season, and at 8/13, I like the price of Newcastle double chance in particular.

Newcastle double chance - 8/13
Under 2.5 match goals - 4/6

Huddersfield Town Preview

Had it not been for Burnley’s result at Chelsea, Huddersfield’s convincing victory over Crystal Palace would’ve been the outstanding shock of the Premier League’s opening weekend. David Wagner’s side - fancied by many to return straight back to the Championship - made a statement of intent with this performance, going in at half-time two goals to the good via a Joel Ward own goal and Steve Mounie header. At £11.5m, 22-year-old Mounie gave the impression he could be one of the steals of the season should he keep up this level of performance, adding his second of the game after the break with a shot that was too hot for Wayne Hennessey to handle. The Terriers now face three home games in the space of seven days, facing Rotherham United in the League Cup in midweek, before hosting Southampton in the league next weekend. Their form at the John Smith’s Stadium will be crucial to whether they are able to stay in the division or not, with Burnley proving last season that home wins alone can be enough to maintain Premier League status.

Huddersfield Town Team News

Martin Crainie (hip), Jonathan Hogg (ankle), Jon Gorenc-Stankovic (cruciate ligament) and Nahki Wells (ankle) will all miss out through injury for the hosts.

Newcastle United Preview

Frustration was the overriding emotion at St. James’ Park last weekend, as stupidity ultimately cost Newcastle the chance of earning a positive result at home to Tottenham last time out. With the Magpies competing comfortably against last season’s runners-up, captain Jonjo Shelvey was sent off early in the second half for a petulant stamp on Dele Alli - leaving his team with 40 minutes to battle with ten men. Spurs took full advantage of the extra man as Alli and Ben Davies both got on the scoresheet after the sending off, reminding Newcastle of the thin margins for error - or in this case, lunacy - in the Premier League. Overall, positives can be taken from their performance, with Rafa Benitez’s game plan to frustrate and obstruct Spurs’ attacking rhythm proving to be effect in the first-half. With Shelvey suspended for this weekend’s trip to Huddersfield, the priority will be to keep eleven men on the pitch this time around and see if that will ultimately see them come away with points on the board. Newcastle were undoubtedly a better side than Huddersfield last term, but it will be interesting to see how much they have closed the gap after bringing in a host of new players.

Newcastle United Team News

Jonjo Shelvey is suspended for Newcastle after his red card against Tottenham. Newcastle have a number of injury concerns in defence, as Florian Lejeune (ankle), DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett (both hamstring) have all been ruled out for this fixture.
