Huddersfield Town Preview

Given their current form in the Premier League, Huddersfield can scarcely pick and choose games to make wholesale changes, but they did so against Birmingham City without the desired result after drawing 1-1 in their FA Cup tie. It seemed as if David Wagner’s gamble may well pay off when Steve Mounie fired the Premier League side ahead after 20 minutes, but they were pegged back early in the second half when Lukas Jutkiewicz equalised for the Championship strugglers, forcing a replay in ten days time. Winning only one of their last eight in all competitions - that coming away to Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup - David Wagner’s side look low on confidence at present and in real need of a victory to boost their spirits. Given the fact both Swansea and West Brom have both defeated Liverpool in the past week, Huddersfield will hope to pounce on a wounded animal when they visit the John Smith’s Stadium this week. Wagner was unable to get one over his close friend Jurgen Klopp when the two sides met at Anfield, Liverpool running out 3-0 winners, but few will understand the working methods of the former Borussia Dortmund boss than Wagner.

Huddersfield Town Team News

Sean Scannell (groin) and Elias Kachunga (knee) are both ruled out, while Martin Cranie (ankle) and Daniel Williams (back) are unlikely to feature.

Liverpool Preview

Whilst only being perceived as a blip at this point, Liverpool will be wary of turning January into a month of struggle for the second consecutive season after crashing out of the FA Cup with a 3-2 defeat to West Brom. Liverpool started brightly and took the lead through Roberto Firmino’s delicate chip after five minutes, but Jay Rodriguez’s quickfire double put the Baggies ahead in the next five. Joel Matip’s own goal left the Reds 3-1 down at half-time, and despite making all three substitutions at once and Mohamed Salah’s effort, Liverpool could not come from behind, leaving behind what most feel was their best chance of silverware this season. The Merseysiders had won five games in a row in all competitions before losing to both the 20th and 19th-placed sides in the Premier League within the same week, though it would still be too early to begin to panic at Anfield. Remaining 4th in the Premier League coming into this game, they can restore their five-point buffer over Tottenham - who they also face next at the weekend - should they pick up three points here. Still winning five of their last seven away in the Premier League, the Reds have generally been in solid form on the road this season, despite their defeat at Swansea.

Liverpool Team News

Nathaniel Clyne (back) is ruled out, while Ragnar Klavan (muscle), Adam Lallana (leg) and Daniel Sturridge (hamstring) are doubtful.
