Huddersfield Town vs Chelsea Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Huddersfield Town host Chelsea at the John Smith’s Stadium on 12/12/17, as the away team look to bounce back from a disappointing result at the weekend. Huddersfield ended their slump with a 2-0 home win over Brighton, while Chelsea lost 1-0 away to West Ham. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Huddersfield have been strong at home this season, performing well against both Manchester clubs before now. A midweek game in a cold, wintery Yorkshire may not be at the top of Chelsea’s Christmas list at present and I can see them dropping points once more here.

Huddersfield Town Preview

It was a battle of two newly-promoted sides in Yorkshire on Saturday, as Huddersfield and Brighton met in the top flight for the first time in their history. With a win apiece in the Championship from their meetings last season, it was Huddersfield who came out on top this time around, winning 2-0 thanks to an excellent first-half display. Striker Steve Mounie - who had failed to score since an opening day brace against Crystal Palace - was the match winner for the home side, netting both of his goals in the first half as they secured a much-needed win. Prior to the victory, Huddersfield had lost four in a row in the Premier League, scoring just one goal during that time, with that coming against Manchester City in a 2-1 defeat at home. David Wagner’s side have lost just twice at home in the Premier League this season, coming against Tottenham and Manchester City, even taking the lead against the latter. Having already accrued a home victory over Manchester United this season, they will now hope to add Chelsea to their list of Premier League scalps, with a win also potentially taking them into the top half of the table. One thing this team was lacking in the first half of the season was a prolific goalscorer, but will now hope to see greater consistency from record signing Mounie in the coming weeks.

Huddersfield Town Team News

Philip Billing (ankle) and Jon-Gorenc Stankovic (cruciate ligament) are both ruled out, but Michael Hefele (achilles) could return.

Chelsea Preview

Antonio Conte was unequivocal over his side’s title chances on Saturday afternoon after watching West Ham claim their first victory under David Moyes with a 1-0 win at the London Stadium. Marko Arnautovic scored the opening goal six minutes into the contest as Chelsea proved unable to break down what was a resilient performance from the Hammers, uncharacteristically so for this season, leaving Conte to concede that his side are out of the title race. In fact, the Italian illuded to the fact that they had never really been in it, with it not feasible that a side who have lost four of their opening 16 games could ever seriously compete for the title, especially with the form of Manchester City. The defeat comes not long after the Blues had put together a very decent run in the Premier League, winning six and drawing one of their last seven games before then. From that perspective, the loss shouldn’t be all doom and gloom, but the title was always going to be unlikely from the moment they lost back-to-back games against Manchester City and Crystal Palace. They lost five games in the whole of last season’s title-winning campaign and were in the midst of their tremendous 13-match win streak this time 12 months ago.

Chelsea Team News

David Luiz (knee) and Danny Drinkwater (illness) are unlikely to be involved.
