Houston Dynamo vs Columbus Crew Match Prediction

By Charlotte Louise Bushell

Houston Dynamo had the best possible start to the MLS campaign after a 2-1 win over MLS Cup champions Seattle Sounders. Goals from Erick Torres and Romell Quioto in the 20th and 42nd minutes respectively provided Houston with a 2-0 advantage going into half-time. Even though Clint Dempsey pulled one back in the 58th minute, it was not sufficient for Seattle to get anything out of the game. Columbus Crew would be reasonably happy with a 1-1 draw with Chicago Fire on the opening day. Ethan Finlay’s 70th minute goal was cancelled out by David Accam’s 73rd minute goal to share the spoils.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Despite finishing bottom of the Western Conference, Houston Dynamo can be backed for success in the game against Columbus Crew. The home team’s impressive form at the BBVA Compass Stadium saw them take six out of their eight wins in the league campaign. Columbus Crew are extremely poor when it comes to away matches. They finished the 2016 MLS season with just two away wins. Odds for a Houston Dynamo win are also available at an attractive price.

Apart from two 1-0 games, this fixture has consistently seen over 2.5 goals. Houston’s first match also saw 2.5 goals. I see excellent value in backing this game to produce over 2.5 goals.

Houston Dynamo win – 5/4

Total goals over 2.5 – 19/20

Houston Dynamo Preview

Houston Dynamo would be delighted with the start to the campaign, as they managed to defeat reigning champions Seattle Sounders. The victory was especially a major positive considering that the club did not end the 2016 MLS home games in a positive way. Houston Dynamo have managed one league victory at BBVA Compass Stadium since August. Alberth Elis made the switch to Houston in the transfer window, and the 21-year-old is seen as one of the underrated signings in the off-season. His presence could free up space for Erick Torres and Romell Quioto – both players scored in the win over Seattle.

Columbus Crew Preview

Columbus Crew have not had good away form in recent memory, as the club has largely relied on home form in order to get through. Even last season, they managed only two away wins, as a big chunk of their wins (6) came at home. The addition of Jonathan Mensah is a great bonus to the team, as the Ghanaian will add steel and increase defensive solidarity. The only hindrance may be his lack of football since leaving French outfit Evian in February 2016. Defensive strength was a major issue for the club last season, as they had the second worst defensive record last season with 58 goals in the 34 league games.

Total goals over 2.5 - 19/20
