Hoffenheim Preview

Hoffenheim returned to competitive football at the weekend against third-tier Rot-Weiss Erfurt in the DFB Pokal, with the potential of a shock on the cards. After a goalless first half, German under-21 international Nadiem Amiri scored the only goal of the game, ten minutes into the second half, as the Bundesliga outfit secured a comfortable passage into the next round. 30-year-old manager Julian Nagelsmann is one of the most exciting young managers in world football, with this his first taste of European football. Hoffenheim were a surprise package in the Bundesliga last season, rallying to finish 4th after winning seven of their last fourteen games the season before to avoid relegation. However, the club lost two crucial first-team players to the juggernaut that is Bayern Munich in the off-season, with Sebastian Rudy and Niklas Sule both departing for the Allianz Arena after outstanding individual seasons.

Hoffenheim Team News

Adan Szalai (calf) is a doubt for the home side for this contest. Florian Grillitsch and Sandro Wagner should both shake off foot injuries to feature.

Liverpool Preview

Liverpool’s defensive woes have haunted them so often in recent years and so it became to be the case once again on Saturday as they drew 3-3 away to Watford. Stefano Okaka headed Watford in front after being left unmarked in the area, but Sadio Mane equalised. Abdoulaye Doucoure restored the Hornets’ lead before a quickfire double from Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah put the visitors in front. However, Miguel Britos’ scrappy equaliser condemned them to a draw ahead of their return to Champions League action. This will be only the second time Liverpool have appeared in the competition since 2009 and failed to escape the group stages last time around. Philippe Coutinho is unlikely to feature once again as he continued to be linked with a move to Barcelona and his absence will be a huge loss for the Reds. There were signs of encouragement from an attacking sense at Vicarage Road on Saturday, as all three of Liverpool’s forwards were on the scoresheet.

Liverpool Team News

Adam Lallana (thigh) is ruled out for the visiting side. Nathaniel Clyne and Philippe Coutinho (both back) are also absent, while Daniel Sturridge (hamstring) remains doubtful.
