Hertha Berlin vs Athletic Bilbao Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Hertha Berlin and Athletic Bilbao will square off at the Olympiastadion Berlin on Thursday night, with both sides looking for a positive start into their Europa League group J. Hertha Berlin only managed a 1-1 home draw against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga at the weekend, despite the fact that Mathew Leckie gave them the lead in the 38th minute. On the flip side, Athletic Bilbao won 2-0 at home over Girona in La Liga thanks to goals from Iker Muniain and Aritz Aduriz. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

It’s a tricky game to predict as both sides have plenty of quality within their ranks. Hertha Berlin are playing in front of their own fans and are favourites to win at odds 29/20, but their recent home form has been a complete mixed bag. Both teams have been involved in low-scoring affairs of late, so I’m backing another tight game in this one. Here are our best two betting predictions for Hertha Berlin v Athletic Bilbao:

Under 2.5 goals at 4/6

Both teams to score - No at 10/11

Hertha Berlin saw over 1.5 goals in 9 out of their last 10 games played

Hertha Berlin have conceeded only 0 goals in their last 1 games against Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao have not conceded a goal in 70% of their last 10 games played

Athletic Bilbao have conceeded only 0 goals in their last 1 games against Hertha Berlin

Hertha Berlin Preview

Hertha Berlin finished sixth in the Bundesliga table last term and booked their place into the Europa League group stage this season. They kicked off the current season with a 0-2 win over Hansa Rostock in the DFB Pokal Cup along with another 2-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart in their Bundesliga opener a month ago. However, their recent form in the Bundesliga has let them down as they suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of Borussia Dortmund along with a disappointing 1-1 home draw against Werder Bremen at the weekend. On home soil, Hertha Berlin have enjoyed a decent run of form over the past month and a half, winning three and drawing once in their last four home fixtures across all competitions. Regarding their Europa League record, Hertha Berlin have been eliminated from the third qualifying round last season, losing 3-2 on aggregate at the hands of Brondby. The Germans managed to get through the UEFA Europa League group stage in their most recent appearance, in 2009/10. Hertha Berlin can count on their recent home form in the Europa League, having lost just once in their last six European home games.

Hertha Berlin Team News

Davie Selke, Julius Kade, Valentino Lazaro and Dennis Smarsch are all doubts, but Jonathan Klinsmann is still out through an ankle injury.

Athletic Bilbao Preview

On the other hand, Athletic Bilbao have enjoyed a great run of form over the past two months, losing just once in their last ten games across all competitions. The Basques enter the fray on the back of a six-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, winning four and drawing twice in this term. Bilbao have already played four games in the Europa League this season, as they beat Dinamo Bucharest and Panathinaikos in the qualifying. Bilbao looked incredibly strong at the back over the past few weeks, having kept a clean sheet in each of their last four games across all competitions. Bilbao have reached the Europa League final back in 2011/12 season and have successfully negotiated the last two group stages. Away from home, the Basque club have only won once in their last eight games in the Europa League. The bad news is that Bilbao have conceded at least two goals in five of their last eight European away games. However, their recent form on the road have seen them win four of their last six away games across all competitions, including a 2-3 victory at Panathinaikos in their most recent Europa League trip. In terms of betting, Aritz Aduriz to score anytime seem to be a value bet at odds 13/10, as he already managed to find the back of the net in five occasions across all competitions so far this season.

Athletic Bilbao Team News

Oscar De Marcos and Yeray Alvarez are both missing through injury, while Kepa Arrizabalaga Revuelta is a doubt.
