Heracles vs Ajax Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Having lost the Eredivisie title at the hands of Feyenoord last term, Ajax will be looking to kick off the new season in a much better manner when they travel to the Polman Stadion to take on Heracles on Saturday night. Heracles suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss at the hands of FC Emmen in a friendly game a week ago. Meanwhile, Ajax come into this tie on the back of a 2-2 home draw against Nice in the second leg of their Champions League third round qualifying tie. Donny van de Beek and Davinson Sanchez both got on the scoresheet for Ajax in that game, but unfortunately, they conceded a late goal and had to settle for a 2-2 draw. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Despite the recent struggle, Ajax have enough quality to get back to winning ways against Heracles on Saturday. The Amsterdammers are undefeated in 23 meetings with Heracles, winning 20 in the process. In addition, they picked up back-to-back 0-2 wins in their most recent three visits to the Polman Stadion. I’m backing Ajax to win and to score a couple of goals here as the hosts have struggled to keep the ball out of their own net recently, conceding at least two goals in each of their most recent three fixtures.

Heracles Preview

Heracles finished in mid-table in the Eredivisie last term and missed the Europa League places only on goal difference. Heracles looked dangerous in front of goal last season as they managed a decent tally of 53 goals in 34 rounds, but their back line hasn’t been that solid as they allowed 55 goals in this term. They kicked the pre-season off with back-to-back wins, but suffered consecutive defeats in their last three friendlies against Viktoria Koln, Granada CF and FC Emmen, conceding two goals in each of these. Similar to the most Eredivisie sides, Heracles have sold more than they bought during this summer transfer window. They allowed Justin Hoogma to move to Hoffenheim for €2.7m and they only bought Dario van den Buijs from FC Eindhoven for €250,000. However, they managed to bring in Harm Zeinstra, Dries Wuytens, Sebastian Jakubiak and Niels Leemhuis on free transfers. Samuel Armenteros is still at the club despite the fact that he has been heavily linked with a move away after his impressive campaign last term. The 27-year-old striker was Heracles’ top scorer last season with 19 goals in his 29 league appearances. Heracles were a decent side at home last season, collecting 27 points from their 17 home league fixtures. However, they were beaten by Ajax in both meetings last season, scoring just once in this term.

Heracles Team News

Dario Van Den Buys, Vincent Vermeij and Reuven Niemeijer are all doubts ahead of this tie.

Ajax Preview

It was another second place finish for Ajax last term, which means they have finished second in the Eredivisie for the last three seasons in a row. They finished just one point behind the eventual winners Feyenoord, but five points clear of their eternal rivals PSV Eindhoven. They followed this up by losing 0-2 at the hands of Manchester United in the Europa League final and kicked off the new competitive season in a similar disappointing manner. Ajax have been recently eliminated from the Champions League third qualifying round due to the away goal rule after they drew 3-3 on aggregate against Nice. They will be now facing Rosenborg in the Europa League play-offs next Thursday. Ajax’s pre-season campaign has been a complete mixed bag with one win, one loss and one draw in their three friendlies. Ajax have sold three players during the summer, but I think that the departure of Davy Klaassen has affected them more than expected. Ajax’s former captain has joined the Premier League side Everton for a total fee of €27m, while Jairo Riedewald and Kenny Tete have joined Crystal Palace and Lyon respectively for a combined fee of €13 million. They brought in Luis Manuel Orejuela from Deportivo Cali for €3.65m and Benjamin van Leer from Roda JC Kerkrade for €700,000, while Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has returned to the club on a free transfer after nine years since his move from Ajax to Real Madrid.

Ajax Team News

Indy Groothuizen, Abdelhak Nouri, Mateusz Gorski and Norbert Alblas are all doubts ahead of this trip.
