Hamburger SV vs Werder Bremen Match Prediction

By William Hall

Two of Bundesliga's slow starters go head to head this weekend as Hamburg welcome Werder Bremen to the Volkspark Stadion. The bright start from Hamburg has gone to waste over the last few weeks, losing all of their last four matches. Their most recent defeat came away from home to Bayer Leverkusen, losing the game 3-0. Werder Bremen are yet to win a game this season, losing three and drawing three of their first six matches. A 0-0 draw to Freiburg in their last was probably their best chance to get something, but a lack of attacking threat hurt them. Read on for a full match preview complete with all our best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

With both sides coming into this one in very poor form and lacking goals, I can't see this being one of the most entertaining matches this weekend. However, to both of these clubs, this game could prove so important come the end of the season. Hamburg will be desperate to get something from this match after losing all of their last four but without scoring in any of those games, I struggle to see where the goals are going to come from. Not just for Hamburg, for Werder Bremen as well. I say the goals have dried up for both of these teams, which they have. But, in the last four meetings between these two we have seen over 2.5 twice and over 3.5 twice meaning they do like to give each other a battering. With both teams scrapping to get points on the board early, we could be in for another few goals this weekend.

Hamburger SV Preview

Hamburg started the season brightly, beating Augsbury and Cologne. However, since they have lost four games in a row getting beat 2-0 twice and 3-0 twice showing they are both struggling to score goals and struggling to keep clean sheet which is a huge worry. Bar the last two home games, Hamburg had lost just once in thirteen matches showing that last season it was a hard place to go. This is not the first time Hamburg have had a bad run, at the end of the 2015/16 beginning of 2016/17 season they went on a run which saw them lose seven out of nine home matches. They will not want to go into that kind of form again this season, and this is a great chance for them to get another win under their belts.

Hamburger SV Team News

Hamburg have eight players out this weekend with Bjarne Thoelke (medial collateral ligament), Aaron Hunt (thigh injury), Albin Ekdal (back injury), Mats Kohlert (muscle injury), Rck Van Drongelen (groin injury), Sven Schipplock (back injury), Filip Kostic (thigh injury) and Nicolai Muller (ACL) all sidelined.

Werder Bremen Preview

Although Werder Bremen have lost just once in their last four games, they still haven't been able to pick up a win this season. They have lost three and drawn three of their opening six games, which is making everyone at the club wonder when they are going to get their first win of the season. Werder Bremen haven't been able to beat Hamburg away from home in their last three attempts which makes it look another tough and frustrating afternoon for the club. The thing that is making Bremen suffer this season is the lack of action in front of goal. In six matches, they have managed to hit the back of the net just three times, which is not sufficient for any side. Not one of the seven strikers at the club have been able to get on the scoresheet this season, meaning they will be out of confidence. A good performance and result is needed to get their season up and running.

Werder Bremen Team News

Five Werder Bremen players will miss the trip to Hamburg this weekend with Ludovic Sane (knee injury), Rric Oelschlagel (elbow injury), Justin Eilers (ACL), Max Kruse (collorbone injury) and Zlato Junuzovic (achillies tendon injury) all out.
