Hamburger SV vs RasenBallsport Leipzig Match Prediction

By William Hall

The first Bundesliga match after the international break takes place on Friday night between Hamburg and RB Leipzig at the Volksparkstadion. Hamburg won away to FC Cologne in the last round, while RB Leipzig rebounded to win at home to Freiburg. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Tips and Predictions

These sides have played just twice, both in the Bundesliga last term. The away side took each match by a considerable margin, with Hamburg winning 0-3 in Leipzig, while RB Leipzig won 0-4 in Hamburg. If that trend continues here, and we think it will, Leipzig will be the victors. With so many injuries in key areas and the status of Wood being up in the air, Leipzig are huge favorites to win.

Hamburger SV Preview

After a poor season last term, Hamburg were expected to be relegation fodder. However, two wins from two matches in the Bundesliga has given them cause for optimism thus far in the season. It's still early days yet, and there is time to be found out, but they have made a very encouraging start to life this season. After an opening day win at home to Augsburg, they followed it up with a big 1-3 win away to Cologne last time out. Hamburg got their first goal through Andre Hahn after just 28 minutes and would then see their advantage doubled when American striker Bobby Wood scored. They were pegged back in injury time by Frederik Sorensen, but they sealed all three points through Lewis Holtby's finish in the 100th minute of the match. Hamburg won two Bundesliga matches in a row just twice last season, so they will consider this to have been a fantastic start to the season in the league- especially considering how they lost their DFB Pokal opener to lower league opposition.

Hamburger SV Team News

Center back Mergim Mavraj will miss out due to a suspension along with fellow center back Bjarne Thoelke due to injury. Nicolai Muller, due to his excessive celebration, will be out until March, and fellow attackers Aaron Hunt and Fiete Arp look to be out for this one as well. Key striker Bobby Wood played for the United States in World Cup qualifying, and his status will be a doubt after such a quick turnaround.

RasenBallsport Leipzig Preview

RB Leipzig were always going to find it tough to replicate last season's second place finish in the league, one would have feared. But they have done reasonably well so far this season. After a tough loss in the opening fixture at Schalke, the side rebounded to win 4-1 at home over Freiburg before the break. They went down a goal to the visitors when Florian Dierderlechner found the back of the net after 23 minutes and they trailed by that 0-1 deficit at the half. Three minutes later, though Timo Werner had already scored for the home side. Seven minutes later, Willi Orban scored to give them the lead. From there, they got a second from Werner in the 71st minute and then a fourth goal from Bruma after 80 minutes to seal three points for sure. With Champions League football quickly approaching, it will be crucial for them to get as many points as possible before the squad starts to be stretched thin.

RasenBallsport Leipzig Team News

Right winger Marcel Sabitzer and center forward Yussuf Poulsen will miss out for Leipzig as they travel to Hamburg. They appear to have gotten away with any major injury issues about those qualifying matches, so they will be very relieved here to see Timo Werner and Naby Keita arrive unscathed.
