Greece vs Belgium Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

The top two teams from World Cup qualifying group H will be facing each other on Sunday night, as Greece welcome Belgium at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskaki in Piraeus. Greece only managed a nil-nil home draw against Estonia despite the fact that they had an overwhelming 65% ball possession and ten goalscoring opportunities. Meanwhile, Belgium registered a ridiculous 9-0 home victory over the minnows Gibraltar on Thursday, with Thomas Meunier and Romelu Lukaku scoring a hat-trick each along with three other goals from Dries Mertens, Axel Witsel, and Eden Hazard. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Although Belgium have one of the best squads in the world at the moment, their previous two games against Greece have ended in 1-1 draws. Furthermore, three of the last four meetings between these two sides have seen goals at both ends of the field. Although that Greece have struggled for form at home recently, they should be able to cover the handicap in this one.

Greece Preview

Greece kicked off this World Cup qualifying campaign brightly, having won back-to-back games against Gibraltar, Cyprus and Estonia, scoring at least two goals in each of these. However, the Greeks have failed to win a single game since then and come into this tie on the back of a five-game winless streak across all competitions. Scoring goals has been their main issue during this poor run of form as they have netted just two goals in their last four qualifiers. Despite this poor run of form, Greece still find themselves in second position in tgroup H table with 13 points under their belts after seven rounds, just two points clear of third-placed Bosnia & Herzegovina. Although Greece have struggled in the final third recently, they looked very well-organized at the back throughout this qualifying campaign as they have only conceded three goals in seven rounds. Greece’s recent home form has let them down as they have only won once in their last five home fixtures across all competitions. Furthermore, Greece have failed to score in seven of their last 13 home games. The positive thing is that Greece are undefeated in their three home meetings with Belgium across all competitions, winning once and drawing twice in the process. Konstantinos Mitroglou has been Greece’s most dangerous player in front of goal throughout this qualifying campaign with three goals under his belt in six appearances. However, the 29-year-old striker got injured a month ago and he is still on the sidelines.

Greece Team News

Konstantinos Mitroglou is the only injury absentee for Greece ahead of this clash.

Belgium Preview

Belgium’s form over the past year has seen them win seven and draw three of their last ten games across all competitions. The Belgians were knocked out from the Euro 2016 quarter-finals and coach Marc Wilmots paid the price for this disappointing performance. The new manager Roberto Martinez suffered a 0-2 home loss in a friendly match against Spain in his first game in charge back in September 2016, but he hasn’t lost another game since then. They have won six and draw once in this World Cup qualifying campaign, including a comfortable 9-0 home victory over Gibraltar on Thursday night. Thomas Meunier has been the standout player last night, as the PSG’s defender has helped the team with three goals and three assists. Martinez’s men currently sit at the top of the group H table with 19 points after seven rounds, six points clear of the second-placed and their Sunday’s opponents Greece. Away from home, Belgium are undefeated in the last five games across all competitions, scoring at least two goals in four of these. Belgium are this qualifying campaign’s goalscorers at the moment with 33 goals under their belts after seven rounds. Romelu Lukaku is the team’s topscorer with nine goals in six appearances and he has also managed to score three goals for Manchester United in the opening three rounds of the new Premier League season.

Belgium Team News

Eden Hazard has been called-up despite he is still injured, but Radja Nainggolan’s omission has raised eyebrows. Steven Defour has been offered a recall for the first time since November 2016, while Jordan Lukaku has been rewarded with a call up following his fine start to the season at Lazio.
