Girona vs Atletico Madrid Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Girona prepare to enter into their first ever La Liga campaign with a home game against Atletico Madrid. The club have never been in the top flight in their 87-year-old history. However, they have been promoted to the top division after securing second spot in the Segunda Division. The club went through a reasonably positive pre-season, which has been improved by a win over Manchester City. Atletico Madrid were able to fend off concerns about the transfer ban by witnessing a reasonably successful pre-season. The club are not allowed to sign players in the summer.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Atletico have an away game to begin the La Liga 17/18 season. Away form was reasonably good for the club last season, as they picked up 34 points from the 19 away games. Last season, Girona did not have the strongest home record despite being in the Segunda Division. The team are up against a much higher class of opponent, and Atletico come on the back of a third place finish in the La Liga. Atletico are extremely tough to beat even on the road, and they suffered just three defeats last season. I would go with a win for Atletico Madrid. The feature of Atletico’s away matches last season was a low turnaround of goals. A remarkable 13 of the 19 away matches witnessed less than 2.5 goals. I would go with backing this game to produce under 2.5 goals.

Girona Preview

The promotion to the top flight is a major boost for Girona and the club tries to remain in the top division by spending in a prudent manner this summer. Bernardo Espinosa is the major signing of the summer for the newly promoted outfit, and they have splashed out €4.5 million on the centre back. The rest of the signings have either been on loan or on a Bosman. There has not been significant departures from the club. Samuele Longo was the key player for Girona last season after scoring 14 goals in 38 appearances.

Girona Team News

Girona manager Pablo Machín does not have injury worries coming into the match.

Atletico Madrid Preview

Atletico Madrid have been able to keep majority of their stars at the club, and it was of primary importance due to the transfer ban in place. The club have gone through a successful pre-season that witnessed wins over the likes of Napoli and Liverpool. Manager Diego Simeone has seen the club go through a consolidation phase after surprise league title victories. Their primary objective in the 2017-18 La Liga campaign will be finishing in the top three and reaching the Champions League places. However, the possibility of taking advantage of Barcelona’s summer blues cannot be ruled out. Antoine Griezmann was the top scorer at the club last season, and he finished with 26 goals in 53 appearances.

Atletico Madrid Team News

Simeone will be without Diego Godin and Thomas due to suspension. Filipe Luis (calf) remains in doubt for the game.
