Gent vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Gent welcome Tottenham Hotspur at the GHELAMCO-Arena on Thursday evening in the first leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie. Gent suffered an unexpected 0-1 home defeat at the hands of Eupen last time out in the Jupiler League, with Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s men conceding the goal in the 96th minute. On the flip side, Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 2-0 on the road at Liverpool in the Premier League, with Mauricio Pochettino’s boys conceding two first-half goals within the space of two minutes. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Gent Preview

Gent’s four-game unbeaten run in the Jupiler League ended at the weekend as they lost 0-1 at home at the hands of Eupen. Gent have been struggling for consistency throughout this Jupiler League campaign and find themselves only in 8th position in the standings, just one point off the top six. Regarding their Europa League campaign, Gent finished second in the group H table with eight points to their name after six rounds. Overall, Gent have only lost two of their ten Europa League games this season. They were on a three-game winless streak prior to their 0-1 win at Konyaspor in their final group fixture. On home soil, Gent have lost just one of their five Europa League fixtures - a 3-5 defeat at the hands of Shakhtar Donetsk back in November 2016. The Belgian outfit has yet to win a springtime UEFA game in four attempts, but they managed to reach the Champions League round of 16 last season when they were beaten by the Bundesliga side Wolfsburg. Kalifa Coulibaly and Danijel Milicevic have been Gent’s most dangerous players in front of goal throughout the Europa League group stage campaign, having scored three goals each.

Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Tottenham’s eleven-game unbeaten run in all competitions ended at the weekend as they were beaten 2-0 on the road at Liverpool in the Premier League. This leaves Spurs only in 3rd position in the standings, two points off the 2nd-placed Manchester City and already 10 points behind the current leaders Chelsea. The title race isn’t over, but I don’t know if Mauricio Pochettino will care too much about the Europa League. Last season, Spurs were knocked out from the round of 16 following a 5-1 defeat on aggregate at the hands of Borussia Dortmund. Tottenham finished third in their Champions League group E table this season to book their place into this stage of the Europa League. Spurs aren’t regarded as good travellers, as they have only won two of their last 13 away games in all competitions. In addition, they have registered just one victory in three European away fixtures this season. I’m pretty sure that Pochettino will rest his best players for their Sunday’s FA Cup trip to Fulham, but the reserve team might prove to be too strong for a Gent side who have struggled for fluency in the Belgian League this season. This means that Vincent Janssen, Ben Davies and Heung-Min Son should get game time on this trip, along with Kieran Trippier, Kevin Wimmer or Moussa Sissoko.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Tottenham are hot favourites to win here despite that I’m expecting them to play with the reserve team. Gent have struggled for consistency throughout their domestic championship this season, but they remain a solid side in front of their own fans. I’m backing both sides to get on the scoresheet, but I’m also expecting Gent to secure at least a draw in this one.
