Gent vs Genk Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Gent and Genk will be facing each other at the GHELAMCO-arena on Thursday night for the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie, in what will be only the second all-Belgian clash in UEFA competition. Gent fought back from one-goal down to secure a narrow 2-3 victory on the road at Waasland-Beveren last time out in the Europa League thanks to a brace from Jeremy Perbet and another strike from Yuya Kubo. Meanwhile, Genk won 2-1 at home over Club Brugge thanks to a first-half brace from Mbwana Samata. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT.

Betting Predictions and Tips

I’m backing Gent to win here as their home form has been impeccable across all competitions since the start of the season. Furthermore, they have only lost one of their six Europa League home fixtures this season, while winning four in this term. In addition, Gent are undefeated in their last four home meetings with Genk in the Jupiler League, keeping a clean sheet in each of these.

Gent Preview

Gent have enjoyed a decent run of form since the start of the new year, losing just one of their ten away games across all competitions after the winter break. Gent head into this tie on the back of a five-game unbeaten streak in all competitions, winning three and drawing two in this term. Gent looked very good going forward over the past two weeks, scoring at least two goals in each of their last three games across all competitions. Despite their recent win, Gent find themselves only in 7th position in the Jupiler League table with 47 points after 29 rounds, just one point behind the 6th-placed Charleroi. Regarding their Europa League adventure this season, Gent finished second in the group H table, just two points clear of 3rd-placed Braga. However, Gent produced the surprise in the round of 32, as they eliminated the Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur from the competition following a 3-2 victory on aggregate. Gent can count on their home form ahead of this clash, as they have only lost two of their 21 home fixtures across all competitions this season. In addition, Gent have only lost one of their six home European fixtures this season, scoring at least two goals in five of these. Furthermore, Gent are unbeaten in their four home meetings with Genk in the Jupiler League, keeping a clean sheet in each of these.

Genk Preview

Genk have also been in fine shape recently, losing just one of their last eight games across all competitions. That sole defeat came on the road at Anderlecht in the Jupiler League a fortnight ago, but they bounced back with a hard-fought 2-1 home win over the current leaders Club Brugge last weekend. The recent victory lifts Genk to 8th spot in the Jupiler League table, just two points off Thursday’s opponents. Keeping the ball out of their own net has been Genk’s biggest problem throughout this Jupiler League campaign, as they already conceded 35 goals in 29 rounds. Regarding their Europa League campaign, Genk topped the group F table, before beating Astra 3-2 on aggregate in the round of 32. That was their first springtime UEFA fixture, and this is also the first time when they have reached the last 16 of a major UEFA competition. Genk have endured a mixed run of form on the road over the past three months, registering three defeats, four draws and three victories in their last ten away games across all competitions. Furthermore, Genk have only won two of their six away fixtures in the Europa League this season. Mbwana Samata and Nikolaos Karelis have been Genk’s most dangerous players in front of goal throughout their Jupiler League campaign, scoring nine goals each.
