FC Groningen vs AZ Alkmaar Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

FC Groningen and AZ Alkmaar will be facing each other at the Noordlease Stadion on Sunday at lunchtime, with both teams looking to return to winning ways in the Eredivisie. FC Groningen threw away a one-goal lead twice to succumb to a 3-2 defeat on the road at PEC Zwolle. Ritsu Doan gave Groningen the lead in the 15th minute, while Tom van Weert made it 1-2 soon after the break. However, the latter saw red with just three minutes to go and the hosts managed to score the winner in the stoppage time. Meanwhile, AZ Alkmaar suffered a heavy 0-4 home loss against the reigning champions Feyenoord prior to the International break, with John van den Brom’s men conceding three goals in the first half. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Groningen have been a solid side on home soil in this early part of the season, while AZ are undefeated in four away games across all competitions at the moment. AZ are hot favourites to win here, but Groningen aren’t such a bad side so I expect a difficult tie. I’m fancying goals in this one, as three of the last five meetings between these two teams have seen more than four goals scored.

FC Groningen Preview

FC Groningen have endured a mixed run of form in this early part of the season, registering three wins, three defeats and two draws in their eight competitive fixtures. Groningen were on a two-game winning streak across all competitions before losing 3-2 on the road at PEC Zwolle prior to the International break. The good news is that Groningen have been a strong side on home soil this season, winning two and drawing two of their four home games in the Eredivisie. Furthermore, FC Groningen have won two of their last three home meetings with AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie, scoring two goals in each of these. Groningen find themselves only in 12th place in the Eredivisie table tied on 8 points with the 11th-placed Heracles, three points clear of the drop zone. Groningen found the back of the net in eleven occasions in seven games so far this season, but their back line has been the main reason for their struggle. They have conceded 13 goals in this term, which is one of the worst defensive records in the division. Mimoun Mahi is a player to watch for Groningen, as the Moroccan midfielder has already helped the team with four goals and one assist in his seven league appearances.

FC Groningen Team News

Lars Veldwijk and Todd Kane are both doubts, but Tom van Weert is missing through suspension.

AZ Alkmaar Preview

AZ Alkmaar, on the flip side, have had a solid start to the season, but their recent form has seen them lose back-to-back games against Excelsior and Feyenoord, conceding six goals and scoring none in the process. Keeping the ball out of their own net has been their main problem recently, as they allowed at least two goals in each of their last three competitive fixtures, including their KNVB Beker Cup tie against Maastricht. Actually, AZ have only kept two clean sheets in their nine games across all competitions so far this season. The good news is that Alkmaar are undefeated in four competitive away fixtures, scoring at least two goals in three of these. In addition, they picked up a comfortable 1-4 away victory over Groningen in their most recent trip to the Noordlease Stadion. Head-to-head, AZ Alkmaar are undefeated in their last three meetings with Groningen in the Eredivisie, scoring four goals in two of these. Wout Weghorst has been the standout player for AZ Alkmaar in this early part of the campaign, as he is the club’s topscorer with 6 goals and one assist.

AZ Alkmaar Team News

Calvin Stengs and Marko Vejinovic are both out through injury, while Ron Vlaar, Quwejan, Levi Opdam and Fredrik Midtsjo are all doubts.
