FC Cologne vs Hamburger SV Match Prediction

By Gary Gillles

After opening day defeat, Cologne will play host to Hamburg on match day two with an eye on getting off to a start in the Bundesliga.  Cologne fell to a defeat away to Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday, losing 1-0 thanks to a goal from Nico Elvedi shortly after half time.  Hamburg, on the other hand, got their first win of the season at the first attempt by that very same score.  In what has already become a YouTube hit, Nicolai Muller scored after just eight minutes before celebrating far too wildly and ultimately tearing his ACL.

Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Hamburg and Cologne have been fairly even down the years when it comes to head to head meetings.  Last season, they met three times in all competitions, and the home side won all three times.  Cologne are big favorites at home here as Hamburg will have to be cautious to not concede.

They have just the one big threat going forward in Wood, especially after Muller's injury, and will have to work on the counter.

You can get FC Cologne at 21/10 to win and keep a clean sheet.

However, Hamburg's Bobby Wood to score in either half, your choice, is at 8/1 and is a decent punt to take a look at.

FC Cologne Preview

FC Cologne did not get their season off to the kind of start they would have wanted last week, but it was far from a disaster to lose away to Borussia Monchengladbach by just a goal.  The crowd was alight for their hosts last week, and found themselves the win they craved.  They will have that same advantage this weekend when they welcome Hamburg in to face them.  Their loss away from home, based on last season's finish, was no real shock at all as most of their damage was done at home on the way to finishing fifth.  They lost just twice at home all of last season, so that will be a boon for them in this match as they return their for the first time this season.

FC Cologne Team News

Center midfielder Nikolas Nartey and  left back Konstantin Rausch appear to be out for sure here.  Goalkeeper Thomas Kessler does have a finger injury, so is unlikely to play

Hamburger SV Preview

Hamburg got off to a nice start last weekend when they scored early on at home against Augsburg.  However, it quickly took a turn for the worse with the aforementioned injury, and that seemed to suck all of the air out of the arena.  From there in truth, Augsburg dominated proceedings, bossing possession throughout the match and taking more corners than their opponents.  Had they gotten shots on target, Hamburg would be looking at a poor start.  This is a side that find goals very hard to come by, so if you can score a couple they are done for.  They will have to be very solid to get anything from this match.

Hamburger SV Team News

Winger Nicolai Muller will be out until around March after his celebration injury.  Striker Pierre-Michael Lasogga is said to be day-to-day, but he's also linked with a move away.  Center back Bjanre Thoelke is out until September, and fellow center back Mergim Mavraj is also set to miss out.
