Excelsior vs Feyenoord Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Excelsior welcome Feyenoord at the Van Donge & De Roo Stadion on Sunday at lunchtime, with both Rotterdam clubs looking for their second consecutive victory in the Eredivisie. Excelsior picked up a 1-2 victory on the road at Willem II last weekend thanks to an own-goal from Timon Wellenreuther and a second-half goal from Zakaria El Azzouzi. Meanwhile, the reigning champions Feyenoord won 2-1 at home over FC Twente thanks to goals from Nicolai Jorgensen and Steven Berghuis. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

First of all, I’m expecting goals in this one as the last eight league meetings between these two sides have seen at least three goals scored. Secondly, Feyenoord should be able to grab another three points as Excelsior definitely have a much weaker squad than last season and their win over Feyenoord towards the end of the previous season was achieved due to the fact that the defending champions were under pressure.

Excelsior Preview

Excelsior have enjoyed a strong run of form towards the end of the previous Eredivisie campaign and they have started the new season in a similar manner, registering a narrow 1-2 win on the road at Willem II last weekend. Despite losing their key players in the shape of Warner Hahn and Nigel Hasselbaink this summer, Excelsior proved to have enough to beat Willem II. They have created more goalscoring chances than the hosts and looked very dangerous on the counter-attack. Excelsior’s first goal of the game was actually an own-goal from Willem’s goalkeeper Wellenreuther, but the second goal was scored by Ajax’s loanee Zakaria El Azzouzi, who played for Sparta Rotterdam last term and managed to score five goals. Excelsior’s home form over the past nine months has been a complete mixed bag with five draws, five wins and two defeats in their last twelve home fixtures across all competitions. The good news is that Excelsior picked up a 3-0 win over Feyenoord in their most recent home meeting with the defending champions. Actually, that win came in the penultimate round of the previous Eredivisie campaign when Feyenoord needed a victory to wrap up the title.

Excelsior Team News

Mike van Duinen is the only injury absentee for Excelsior ahead of this clash.

Feyenoord Preview

Meanwhile, Feyenoord have won the Eredivisie title last season and followed that up with a penalty-shootout win over Vitesse in the Dutch Super Cup a fortnight ago. Furthermore, the Rotterdammers kicked off the new Eredivisie campaign with a narrow 2-1 home victory over FC Twente in a game in which they had an overwhelming 72% ball possession and 15 goalscoring opportunities. Nicolai Jorgensen has been the Eredivisie’s topscorer last term with 21 goals and eleven assists under his belt, and he picked up where he left off last season as he already got on the scoresheet once in the opening round. Feyenoord have sold two of their last season’s best defenders this summer, but they brought in decent replacements in the shape of Ridgeciano Haps, Jeremiah St. Juste for a total fee of €10.8 million while the right-back Kevin Diks came on loan from Fiorentina. Feyenoord’s recent away form hasn’t been that prolific as they have only won five of their last ten away games across all competitions and suffered a 3-0 loss at Excelsior in their most recent Eredivisie trip. However, prior to that defeat, Feyenoord picked up three consecutive victories at Van Donge & De Roo Stadion, scoring at least two goals in each of these.

Feyenoord Team News

Bart Nieuwkoop, Bradley Jones, Sven van Beek and Karim El Ahmadi are all doubts, but Kenneth Vermeer is missing through a knee injury.
