Everton Preview

Sam Allardyce determined his team need to learn to be “boring” after they suffered yet another defeat in the Premier League, this time losing 4-0 away to a rampant Tottenham Hotspur side at Wembley. Heung-Min Son put Spurs ahead after 26 minutes, before Harry Kane scored the first of his two goals just two minutes into the second half. He completed his brace from close range on the hour mark, before Christian Eriksen compounded the Toffees’ misery with the fourth ten minutes from time, leaving Allardyce to return to the drawing board once more and continue their miserable run. The defeat now leaves Everton looking to bounce back from four successive defeats in all competitions, and they will look to do so in this stretch which seems them play three of their next four games at Goodison Park. Out of all three cup competitions they entered already, reasons to be optimistic or excited about the rest of the season are scarce for Everton supporters, whose main priority will be to ensure they do not get dragged into a relegation battle come the end of the season. Despite their poor form, Everton’s home record remains impressive, winning four of their last six at Goodison Park, though they have failed to score in either of their previous two at home.

Everton Team News

Michael Keane (foot), Leighton Baines (calf) and Idrissa Gueye (hamstring) are doubts. Ramiro Funes Mori (knee) is a long-term absentee, while Seamus Coleman (broken leg) isn’t yet ready to return.

West Bromwich Albion Preview

Relief was the overriding emotion at The Hawthorns last time out, as West Brom ended their long-awaited run for a win in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion. Coming into the game without a win in the league since August, the Baggies got off to a blistering start in the first half, taking the lead through Jonny Evans’ header from a corner in the 4th minute. Renowned for their threat from set-pieces, the Baggies’ second goal came via the same method, this time Craig Dawson powering home a header from Chris Brunt’s corner, as a huge weight was lifted from the shoulders of Alan Pardew. Clearly the win over Exeter City in the FA Cup gave the Baggies the confidence to play with greater freedom than has been the case over recent months, as they now look to win their third game on the bounce. They could hardly have picked a better opponent to do so with Everton losing four in a row, although they have won only one of their previous ten matches against the Toffees. That came at Goodison Park in 2016, with Salomon Rondon scoring the only goal of the game in the 14th minute, with Pardew set the task of improving the Baggies’ away league record of one win in 20.

West Bromwich Albion Team News

Nacer Chadli (hip) is ruled out, while James Morrison (achilles) will be assessed.
