Everton vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Everton host Sunderland at Goodison Park on 25/02/17 as Ronald Koeman’s men look to continue their good form against the side currently bottom of the table. Everton were frustrated last time out, however, as Middlesbrough held them to a 0-0 draw at the Riverside Stadium. Sunderland meanwhile will be looking to bounce back from a heavy 4-0 defeat to Koeman’s former club Southampton. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This is set to be a big occasion for David Moyes as he returns to his former club in desperate need of a positive result after the thrashing received from Southampton. However, this Everton side are in very good form at present and I’m expecting this to be a relatively routine home victory for Ronald Koeman’s men.

Everton Preview

Everton could find no way past a stubborn Middlesbrough outfit last time out, as the pragmatic home side held on for a very valuable point. Forwards Romelu Lukaku and Ademola Lookman both had Everton’s best opportunities of the game but both found themselves denied by Boro keeper Victor Valdes. On days such as these where things don’t go your way in front of goal, it’s important to the not lose the game, which is exactly what Everton did here. A promising start was followed by a shaky mid-point for Koeman at Goodison Park, but he now seems to have found a level of consistency since Christmas. The Toffees have won five and drawn three of their eight games in the Premier League since their last league defeat which came on December 19, a 1-0 loss to Merseyside rivals Liverpool. They remain locked in seventh at this moment in time, seven points below Manchester United in sixth and four above West Brom in eighth and will hope the former can win the EFL Cup this weekend to boost their chances of gaining Europa League qualification via their league position. Goodison Park is renowned as a difficult place to visit and their recent record at home certainly suggests so, having suffered just one loss in their last fifteen home Premier League games.

Sunderland Preview

Sunderland took the proverbial one step forward two steps back when Southampton hammered them 4-0 at the Stadium of Light just a week after they themselves beat Crystal Palace by the same scoreline. Saints’ new striker Manolo Gabbiadini has immediately proved his worth and opened the scoring with seemingly the aid of his hand. His sharp turn and finish then saw Saints lead 2-0 at the break, while a late collapse saw a Jason Denayer own goal and Shane Long effort ensured an embarrassing tint was added to the scoreline. As has so often been the case at Sunderland, seeing a way they can escape relegation is tough to imagine, yet their history means it is almost impossible to rule out the possibility of a great escape. They have taken just seven points from a possible thirty-six away from home this season, with their 4-0 win away at Crystal Palace very much the exception rather than the rule itself. After facing Everton and Manchester City in their next two, Sunderland take on Middlesbrough, Burnley, Watford and Leicester and that stretch of four games could be decisive in their survival effort. And of course, when a striker as prolific as Jermain Defoe is in your side, anything remains possible.
