Everton vs Stoke City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Everton welcome Stoke City to Goodison Park on 12/08/17 as the Premier League makes its long-awaited return this weekend. After a busy summer filled with new arrivals, Everton will be keen on laying an early marker for the rest of the league as they look to break into the top-six conversation. As for Stoke, new arrivals may have come at something of a premium and they will be targeting a significant improvement on the performances at the end of last season. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Everton will have pressure on their shoulders, both internally and externally, to get off to a good start here and get three points on the board early before a tough series of fixtures. Stoke haven’t strengthened to the same level as the hosts and I’m expecting this to be a home win.

Everton Preview

In what was an unprecedented level of activity at Everton this summer, the key for Ronald Koeman will be to help this squad gel together as quickly as possible after bringing in six new first-team additions - and more are expected. Many are predicting that the likes of Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane and Wayne Rooney will help the Toffees close the gap between themselves and last season’s top-six, although it appears they are still waiting to replace the void of an obvious goalscorer in Romelu Lukaku. Everton boasted an impressive home record last season, losing just two of their nineteen Premier League games at Goodison Park and won an admirable eight on the bounce at home between January 2 to April 15. Eager to push into the Premier League’s elite, they have been dealt an extremely difficult start, facing Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United in consecutive games after the visit of Stoke.

Everton Team News

Ramiro Funes Mori (knee), Seamus Coleman (broken leg) and Yannick Bolasie (cruciate ligament) are all long-term absentees for the home side. Ross Barkley (groin) is missing as he looks to force a move away from the club.

Stoke City Preview

The biggest transfer of Stoke’s summer thus far - unfortunately for them - was an outgoing, with Marko Arnautovic departing for West Ham United. Kurt Zouma has arrived on loan, while Josh Tymon, Darren Fletcher and Eric Choupo-Moting have joined on free transfers, as they look to improve a squad which finished last season with just two wins from their last eleven games. Mark Hughes will be under pressure to deliver a more competitive side this term after slipping from three consecutive 9th-placed finishes to 13th last time out. A morale-boosting 2-1 victory away to RB Leipzig in their final match of pre-season should see them come into this contest with confidence and they’ll need it after being handed Everton, Arsenal and Manchester United in three of their first four Premier League fixtures. Having Jack Butland back fit and available for the start of this season is a huge boost for the Potters, after the England goalkeeper suffered an injury-hit year.

Stoke City Team News

Stephen Ireland (broken leg) and Ibrahim Afellay (knee) are both unavailable as they continue their rehabilitation from long-term injuries. Bojan (calf) is a doubt, as is new signing Eric Choupo-Moting who has a knee injury.
