Everton vs Lyon Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Everton and Lyon are still searching for their first victory of this Europa League group stage campaign when they square off at the Goodison Park on Thursday night. Everton only managed a 2-2 home draw against Apollon Limassol last time out in the Europa League thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney and Nikola Vlasic. Meanwhile, Lyon threw away a one-goal lead following Bernard Traore’s first half-goal to only register a 1-1 home draw against Atalanta. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Both sides have underperformed recently, but Lyon still looked a little bit better than Everton in this term. Lyon are currently undefeated in four competitive games and they have been scoring goals for fun in this term. I’m expecting goals at both ends of the field in this one, but I think that Lyon should be able to secure a positive result.

Everton Preview

Everton have had a disappointing 2017/18 competitive season so far, having won just four of their last 13 fixtures across all competitions. The Toffees are currently on a three-game winless streak, including a 2-2 home draw against Apollon Limassol last time out in the Europa League. They are rock bottom of the group E table with just one point to their name after two rounds, just one point behind the second-placed and their Thursday’s opponents Lyon. Domestically, Everton have only won two of their eight Premier League fixtures and currently sit only in 16th in the standings, just two points clear of the bottom three. They looked poor at both ends of the field in this term, scoring just five goals while conceding 13. The Toffees need to grab three points here to get their campaign back on track, but they have a difficult task if we are taking into consideration that they only managed draws against Atalanta and Apollon. This is a must-win game for Everton and Ronald Koeman, as another failure here could see the Dutchman sacked before the Toffees’s weekend clash against Arsenal. The good news is that Everton have been a decent side on home soil over the past five months, losing just two of their last ten home fixtures across all competitions. In addition, the Toffees are undefeated in their last five home games in the Europa League, scoring at least two goals in four of these.

Everton Team News

Ramiro Funes Mori, Ross Barkley and Yannick Bolasie are all missing through injury, but James McCarthy and Seamus Coleman are both back in training.

Lyon Preview

Lyon, on the other hand, have also struggled for fluency over the past two months, registering six draws, three wins and one draw in their last ten games across all competitions. Les Gones were on a five-game winless streak prior to their dramatic 3-2 home win over Monaco in Ligue 1 last weekend, with Nabil Fekir scoring the winner in the 95th minute. They still sit in a comfortable 6th spot in the Ligue 1 table at the moment, but their form throughout this Europa League campaign hasn’t been that good. Les Gones recorded back-to-back 1-1 draws against Apollon Limassol and Atalanta in the opening two games of their Europa League group stage campaign, with their goals being scored by Memphis Depay and Bertrand Traore. Lyon sit second in the group E table tied on 2 points with the 3rd-placed Apollon Limassol, just two points behind the group leaders Atalanta. The most worrying thing is that Lyon have only won once in their last four away games in the Europa League, but the good news is they have scored at least once in each of their last eight away fixtures in the competition. Les Gones were Semi-finalists last season when they lost 5-4 on aggregate at the hands of Ajax.

Lyon Team News

Ferland Mendy and Mariano Diaz are both doubts ahead of this trip.
