Everton vs Chelsea Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Everton welcome Chelsea to Goodison Park on 23/12/17 as both teams look to continue the winning feeling at their respective clubs. Everton won 3-1 at home to Swansea last time out, while Chelsea were 1-0 winners over Southampton at the weekend. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This fixture has a completely different complexion to how it would’ve done a month or so ago, with Everton looking like a team now capable of climbing the Premier League table. Chelsea meanwhile have struggled to live up to last season’s expectations and I can see each team having to settle for a point here.

Everton Preview

The improvement of this Everton team under Sam Allardyce is palpable, with their fighting spirit displayed on Monday night as they came from behind to beat Swansea 3-1 at Goodison Park. Slack marking from a corner - a huge irritant to Allardyce - allowed Leroy Fer a free finish from close range to put Swansea in front. Wayne Rooney’s missed penalty was followed up by Dominic Calvert-Lewin to pull the Toffees level, before Gylfi Sigurdsson scored an inevitable goal against his former side, hitting the back of the net from 25 yards out. Rooney was then successful from the spot at the second time of asking when he scored Everton’s third in the 73rd minute to continue their excellent record under Allardyce. Now winning four and drawing one of their last five Premier League games, this recent resurgence from Everton has seen them return to the top half of the table, now finding themselves in 9th. It speaks volumes to how strong Everton’s recent form is in that the fact they are now just six points below Tottenham in the Premier League table, while they have also won four in a row at home, scoring 12 goals in doing so.

Everton Team News

Maarten Stekelenburg (groin), Leighton Baines (calf) and James McCarthy (hamstring) are all missing. Seamus Coleman (broken leg), Ramiro Funes Mori (knee) and Ross Barkley (hamstring) are long-term absentees.

Chelsea Preview

Chelsea kept up their pursuit of second-placed Manchester United last weekend after overcoming Southampton with a comfortable 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge. Antonio Conte’s side sealed the three points just before half-time as wing-back Marcos Alonso curled home a free-kick off the inside of the post. Chelsea were never especially troubled by the Saints throughout, having faced just two shots on target all game and dominated for most of the outing. With just one defeat in their last ten games in the Premier League, Chelsea find themselves just three points behind United in what appears to be the race for second in the league, with Manchester City running away with the league, already moving 14 points clear of Conte’s men. In most seasons, the Blues would still be in contention to retain their title, but it seems their wait for back-to-back league wins will go on for at least another two years given the current trajectory of the City side. However, it has been their away form that has been letting them down of late, with the team winning just one of their last three on the road as they visit Merseyside this weekend.

Chelsea Team News

Davide Zappacosta (ill) and David Luiz (knee) are both unlikely to feature.
