By Dean Carr

Everton host Burnley at Goodison Park on 01/10/17 in a game where there will be pressure on the home side to pick up three points. Everton drew 2-2 at home to Apollon Limassol in the Europa League in midweek, while Burnley were also involved in a draw in their last outing, having been held to a 0-0 stalemate by Huddersfield. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Nothing less than a win will do for Everton, with pressure beginning to grow after a number of below-par performances. Given their current form and Burnley’s away record, I can see the Clarets getting a result here.

Everton Preview

A change of system brought no change of result for Everton on Thursday evening as the Toffees were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Cypriot outfit Apollon Limassol in the Europa League. A mistake from Ashley Williams allowed Adrian Sardinero to give the away side a shock lead, before Wayne Rooney pounced on a defensive error of their own from Apollon to level the scoreline. Gylfi Sigurdsson’s deft touch gave Nikola Vlasic the chance to score his first Everton goal, but Hector Yuste scored two minutes from time as the Toffees again failed to win in Europe. It leaves them bottom of their Europa League group heading into a tough double header with Lyon in their next two European fixtures, while they sit 14th in the Premier League table ahead of this weekend’s round of matches. It’s tough to pick out positives from their start of the season at this moment in time, but they may take heart from the fact they have won twice from their three Premier League outings at Goodison Park so far. The method of replacing Romelu Lukaku appeared to be by sharing the goals throughout the team, with a number of goalscoring midfielders, but only Rooney and Oumar Niasse have scored in the Premier League so far this season.

Everton Team News

Phil Jagielka (hamstring), Ramiro Funes Mori (knee), Ross Barkley (hamstring) and Yannick Bolasie (cruciate ligament) are all ruled out. Michael Keane (foot) and James McCarthy (knee) are both doubts.

Burnley Preview

Burnley played out one of the more cagey affairs of the Premier League season so far last weekend after drawing 0-0 at home to Huddersfield Town. Chris Wood came closest to scoring for the Clarets in the first half after squandering a header from Stephen Ward’s cross, while Huddersfield had the better of the play in the second half. It speaks volumes of the game that the most prominent talking point came in relation to a diving incident, with Sean Dyche feeling frustrated by Terriers winger Rajiv van la Parra. As a result, Burnley now come into this fixture with just one win in their last five Premier League matches, but have been outstanding away from home, particularly in comparison with last season’s performance. The Clarets have gone away to Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool in their first three games of the season, taking an extremely impressive five points from a possible nine from those fixtures, with both Everton and Manchester City to travel to in their next two away outings. Key to that success it seems is their change of system, having now lined up with a 4-5-1 when playing on the road, as opposed to last season’s 4-4-2.

Burnley Team News

Tom Heaton (dislocated shoulder), Dean Marney (cruciate ligament) and Nahki Wells (ankle) are missing through injury. Jon Walters (knee) is still absent.
