Espanyol vs Granada Match Preview

Espanyol suffered a second defeat in the last three league games after a 2-1 loss against Valencia on Sunday. Martín Montoya and Santi Mina scored in either half to render David Lopez’ 85th-minute goal only as a consolation for Espanyol. Granada’s win over Sevilla at the start of December seems like a distant memory after a 1-1 draw with Osasuna. Oriol Riera’s early goal was cancelled out by Artem Kravets, although Granada finished with nine men after Agbo and Ponce were sent off.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Espanyol Preview

Espanyol have slipped out of the top half in recent weeks, as the team have secured just one win in the last five matches. If Copa del Rey games are taken into account, Espanyol would be without a win in any competition since December 11. The loss against relegation-threatened Valencia once again puts the defence in the spotlight. Espanyol have managed just one clean sheet in the last five after having managed four in the previous five. The defence has now shipped eight goals in the last four league games, and it remains their biggest worry.

Espanyol to win 8/15

Granada Preview

Granada may possess the league worst defensive record, but the last game against Osasuna will give them a lot of confidence, having drawn the game even while finishing with only nine men. Avoiding defeat in a six-pointer was always going to be crucial, but dropping points at home may be considered as a lost opportunity by Lucas Alcaraz. Granada are yet to win on the road, and this places more emphasis on getting results at the Nuevo Los Cármenes. Even though Granada have taken just three points on their travels, they have scored away goals against all oppositions apart from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Espanyol Team News

Javi Lopez (heel), Leonardo Baptistao (heel), Victor Sanchez (leg), and Felipe Caicedo (fever) are doubtful, while Pape Kouli Diop is still on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Granada Team News

Ezequiel Ponce and Uche Agbo are suspended after being sent off against Osasuna. Isaac Cuenca (hamstring), Matthieu Saunier (thigh), Luis Martins (ankle), and Ruben Vezo (virus) are the injury worries. Mehdi Carcela-González and Victorien Angban are away on international duty.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Espanyol’s loss against Valencia in the last match was a real low point, as Flores would have been expecting his team to return to winning ways. However, the defensive troubles once again reared its ugly head, as Espanyol ended up without a clean sheet for the fourth successive match. The team are a shadow of the outfit which kept six clean sheets in the seven games during October and November. A game against struggling Granada is a perfect opportunity to shore up the defence. I would back Espanyol for a clean sheet.

Granada are without an away win this season, while Espanyol are unbeaten in the last six home matches. I would expect Espanyol to use the game and claim their first league win since December 11.
