Espanyol vs Atletico Madrid Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Espanyol went three matches without a win after a 2-2 draw with Las Palmas at the Gran Canaria. Quique Flores will see this as a disappointing result after his team failed to hold onto a 2-0 lead – provided by goals from Gerard Moreno in the first half. Loic Remy pulled one back in the 80th minute before Jonathan Calleri equalised in the 89th minute. Atletico Madrid picked up another narrow win, as they beat Deportivo Alaves 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano. Just when it seemed that the game was heading to a goalless draw, Fernando Torres popped in with the winner in the 74th minute.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Atletico have been able to win four out of the last five meetings with Espanyol, who have come closest to a win only through two draws. Atletico’s away form has been spectacular this season with six wins from nine matches. Espanyol rely heavily on home results, but the team has suffered two defeats in the last three matches at the RCDE Stadium. I would opt for an Atletico Madrid win.

In the recent six meetings between these two teams, Atletico have had a spectacular defensive record with five sheets. Espanyol’s only goal in this period was back in April 2016 at the RCDE Stadium. After watching Atletico keep five consecutive away clean sheets in the La Liga, I would opt for Diego Simeone’s team to keep a clean sheet.

Espanyol Preview

Espanyol are set to finish 2017 in the bottom half of the table, as the club have once again failed to put together a consistent run of results. The dropped points against Las Palmas highlighted the problems at the club, although the two goals scored does help Espanyol’s attack with a half-decent look. Espanyol are closer to the bottom three owing to a forward line up that has scored just 13 goals – the same as Las Palmas and Malaga. Gerard Moreno, though, has contributed more than 50% of these goals after taking his tally to 7 for the campaign.

Espanyol Team News

Victor Sanchez Mata is suspended for the game, while Flores will also be without Adrian Lopez (meniscus) and Jairo Morilla (discomfort) for the game.

Atletico Madrid Preview

Atletico Madrid are emerging as the masters of getting results out of tough situations, as the team has been able to take more points than the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Valencia over the last five league matches. This has helped Diego Simeone’s team overtake Valencia and move into the second spot. Barcelona are now just six points ahead and have a crucial El Clasico to end 2017. This potentially presents Atletico the chance to narrow the advantage down to 3 points – if results go their way. Atletico have now conceded the fewest goals – a record shared with Barcelona – so far, but their return of 25 goals is also the lowest amongst the top four teams. Antoine Griezmann is the club’s top scorer but with just five league goals so far.

Atletico Madrid Team News

Nicolas Gaitan (discomfort) and Jose Gimenez (knee) are the players unavailable for Atletico Madrid.
