England vs Slovenia Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

England will be aiming to extend their lead at the top of the World Cup qualifying group F table when they welcome Slovenia at the Wembley Stadium in London on Thursday night. England fought back from one-goal down to secure a narrow 2-1 home win over Slovakia a month ago, with Eric Dier and Marcus Rashford getting on the scoresheet for the Three Lions. Meanwhile, Slovenia won 4-0 at home over Lithuania last time out thanks to a brace from Josip Ilicic and two other goals from Benjamin Verbic and Valter Birsa. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

England should be able to grab another three points here as they are unbeaten in five meetings with Slovenia, winning four and drawing once in the process. In addition, England are undefeated in the last five home games across all competitions, scoring at least two goals in each of these. On the contrary, Slovenia have only won once in their last eight away games across all competitions, scoring just four goals in the process.

England Preview

England suffered a humiliating elimination at the hands of Iceland in the round of 16 of the Euro 2016, but they have enjoyed a solid qualifying campaign for the World Cup 2018 in Russia. The Three Lions have won six and draw two of their eight group F fixtures, including a narrow 2-1 home victory over Slovakia last time out. England have only lost two of their last eleven games across all competitions, with both defeats coming at the hands of Germany and France in friendlies. Gareth Southgate’s men have looked very well-organized at both ends of the pitch throughout this qualifying campaign, scoring 16 goals and conceding just three in the process. Theirtop scorerr at the moment is Harry Kane with just three goals under his belt in his four appearances. Southgate omitted Jamie Vardy for these two meetings with Slovenia and Lithuania, as the Leicester’s striker requires medical treatment and a period of rest for a hip problem. At home, England are undefeated in five games across all competitions over the past year, winning four and drawing once in the process. Furthermore, the Three Lions have scored at least two goals in each of their last five home fixtures across all competitions, while conceding just three. In addition, England have won their both home meetings with Slovenia across all competitions, scoring at least two goals in each of these.

England Team News

Southgate was unable to call upon long-term absentees like Danny Rose and Adam Lallana and he has also omitted Jamie Vardy, who needs some rest for a hip problem. In addition, Dele Alli has been given a one-game England ban after making an offensive gesture during his country’s WC qualifier against Slovakia.

Slovenia Preview

On the other hand, Slovenia have endured a mixed run of form over the past year, registering two defeats, two wins and one draw in their last five games across all competitions. After a narrow 1-0 defeat on the road Slovakia on matchday seven, the Slovens bounce back with a comfortable 4-0 home win over Lithuania last time out. This leaves Slovenia in third in the group F table tied on 14 points with the 4th-placed Scotland, just one point behind the second-placed Slovakia. Slovenia looked solid at the back throughout this World Cup qualifying campaign, as they hold the second best defensive record in the division with just four goals conceded in eight games. The bad news is that Slovenia have only managed to beat Malta in their four away qualifiers so far and are currently on a two-game losing streak, scoring none in the process. Furthermore, they have suffered defeats in their both visits to England and are winless in six meetings with the Three Lions overall. Atalanta’s midfielder, Josip Ilicic, has been Slovenia’s most dangerous player in front of goal throughout this qualifying campaign, helping the team with three goals and four assists in his eight appearances.

Slovenia Team News

Josip Ilicic and Tim Matavz have both been in fine shape for their clubs and I’m expecting them to feature in this clash.
