Dundalk vs Rosenborg Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Dundalk welcome Rosenborg at the Oriel Park on Wednesday night for the first leg of their Champions League second qualifying round. Dundalk come into this clash on the back of a narrow 0-1 away win at Bohemians last time out in the Irish Premier Division thanks to a late goal from substitute Ciaran Kilduff. Meanwhile, Rosenborg picked up a comfortable 5-1 home win over Sandefjord in the Eliteserien at the weekend thanks to a brace from Vegar Hedenstad and three other goals from Mike Jensen, Nicklas Bendtner and Matthias Vilhjalmsson. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Both teams come into this tie high on confidence following their recent good run of form. Rosenborg have more experience than Dundalk, but the Irish have looked solid in the Champions League qualifiers last year. I’m backing Rosenborg to win, but I’m also fancying Dundalk to get on the scoresheet.

Dundalk Preview

Dundalk come into this tie high on confidence as they find themselves currently on a five-game winning streak in the Irish Premier Division without conceding a single goal in the process. Dundalk have been dominating the Irish football over the past years as they have won the league title for the past three years in a row. However, it seems that their league title winning streak will end this year as they currently sit in second in the standings, 12 points off the current leaders Cork City. Dundalk’s home form over the past five months has been solid as they have only lost twice in their last 13 home fixtures across all competitions. Last season in the Champions League, Dundalk managed to beat BATE Borisov 3-1 on aggregate, but they lost 3-1 in the play-offs at the hands of Legia Warszawa. On home soil, Dundalk have only lost once in four Champions League qualifiers. David McMillan and Patrick McEleney are the players to watch for Dundalk, as the pair bagged 20 goals between them in the Premier Division so far this season.

Dundalk Team News

Shane Grimes is the only injury absentee for Dundalk ahead of this tie.

Rosenborg Preview

Meanwhile, Rosenborg have won the most recent two Eliteserien titles and they are on the right track to conquer the third one. They currently sit on top of the Eliteserien table with 32 points under their belts after 16 rounds, just five points clear off the 2nd-placed Brann. Their form over the past two months has seen them lose just once in nine games across all competitions. They enter into this clash on the back of a three-game unbeaten streak in the Eliteserien, scoring at least three goals in each of these. Away from home, Rosenborg have only lost once in their last 14 away games across all competitions and are currently on a two-game winless run. Rosenborg managed to beat Norrkoping 5-4 on aggregate in the Champions League second qualifying round last season, but they lost 4-2 on aggregate at the hands of APOEL in the third round. The last time when they managed to reach the group stage was in 2007 when they finished only third in the group table, one point off the runners-up Schalke 04 and five points behind the group winners Chelsea. Former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner and Milan Jevtovic are Rosenborg’s joint topscorers with six goals each.

Rosenborg Team News

Magnus Stamnestro is out through a knee injury.
