Dijon vs Saint-Etienne Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Dijon and Saint-Etienne will square off at the Stade Gaston-Gerard on Saturday evening, with both teams looking to get back to winning ways in Ligue 1. Dijon suffered a 2-1 defeat on the road at Caen last weekend, with their consolation goal being scored by Jordan Marie. On the flip side, Saint-Etienne only managed a 1-1 home draw against Angers last time out in Ligue 1, despite the fact that Remy Cabella gave them the lead in the first minute of the game. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Saint-Etienne are definitely the in-form team in this tie and despite the recent struggle, they still have more quality within their ranks than Dijon. However, I’m not fancying goals in this one as five of the seven meetings between these two teams have seen few than two goals scored. Backing Saint-Etienne to win seem to be a decent bet given the fact that Dijon have only won once in five games this season, and it’s valued at odds 11/8. Here are our top two betting predictions for the game:

Saint-Etienne to win at 11/8

Under 2.5 goals at 13/20

Dijon saw over 1.5 goals in 9 out of their last 10 games played

Saint-Etienne have conceeded only 4 goals in their last 10 games against Dijon

Dijon Preview

Dijon were on a two-game unbeaten streak in Ligue 1 prior to their 2-1 away defeat at Caen last weekend. Their form in this early part of the season hasn’t been very good as they have only won one of their five opening league games. Keeping the ball out of their own net has been Dijon’s biggest problem in this early part of the campaign as they hold the joint worst defensive record in the division, conceding twelve goals in five rounds. They have allowed at least two goals in four of their five games in Ligue 1 so far this season. Dijon have only scored six goals in five games so far this season, including two from their topscorer Benjamin Jeannot. The 25-year-old striker joined the club this summer, but he will have a difficult task to fill Lois Diony’s boots, as the latter netted eleven goals for Dijon last season before moving to Saint-Etienne in pre-season. On home soil, Dijon were on a three-game winless streak across all competitions prior to their 2-1 victory over Montpellier in their most recent home league fixture. The bad news is that Dijon are winless in their four home meetings with Saint-Etienne across all competitions, scoring just once in the process. Dijon are currently second from the bottom in the league table tied on four points with Strasbourg and Montpellier.

Dijon Team News

Eden Massouema, Chang-Hoon Kwon and Cedric Varrault are all doubts, but Mehdi Abeid and Wesley Lautoa are both missing through injury.

Saint-Etienne Preview

On the contrary, Saint-Etienne had an impeccable start to the new Ligue 1 campaign, winning back-to-back games against Nice, Caen, and Amiens without conceding a single goal. Their most recent two league fixtures have seen them lose 3-0 on the road at Paris Saint Germain and then draw 1-1 at home against Angers. Despite the poor recent results, les Verts still sit comfortably in 4th in the standings with ten points under their belts after five rounds, five points of the current leaders Paris Saint Germain. Saint-Etienne have surprised many pundits with their current run of form and furthermore, their next run of games could allow them to get back to winning ways as after Dijon, they will face Rennes, Troyes and Metz. The main problem is that Saint-Etienne have struggled for consistency on the road over the past six months, having won just four of their last ten away games across all competitions. Furthermore, they have only scored once in their two league trips so far this season. The good news is that St. Etienne are undefeated in their four visits to the Stade Gaston-Gerard, winning three and drawing once in the process. Jonathan Bamba, Remy Cabella and Bryan Dabo have scored two goals each in this early part of the campaign, but the bad news is that their most expensive transfer of the summer Lois Diony has failed to find the back of the net so far this season.

Saint-Etienne Team News

Romain Hamouma, Gabriel Silva and Alexander Soderlund are all doubts, while Florentin Pogba is missing through an ankle injury. In addition, Vincent Pajot is out through suspension.
