Derby County vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Gary Gillles

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in the middle of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Derby will be full of confidence after an East Midlands derby victory last weekend in front of their own fans. Defeating Forest 2-0 at Pride Park will due to wonders for morale and Matej Vydra and David Nugent should be buzzing after getting a goal each. Sheffield Wednesday on the other hand suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat away to previously winless Bolton. Kieran Lee got their only goal of the game though the Owls can consider themselves a little unlucky to not get a point from the match. The last meeting between these two teams at the iPro Stadium came in October last season with Derby winning that 2-0 though the Owls got revenge in the reverse fixture coming out on top 2-1.

Betting Tips and Predictions

It will be interesting to see how Sheffield Wednesday bounce back from a loss to struggling Bolton while Derby will come in to this full of confidence. I could not put anyone off backing Derby but you might get a reaction from the Owls while the Rams might step off a gear from that performance against Forest. The East Midlands outfit are fast starters with around 60% of their goals coming in the first-half so it might be instead better to back them to be leading at the half-time interval rather than taking them to win the game. Sticking with this theme you can get around evens that the Rams net in the first 45 minutes and with confidence high they will come flying out of the blocks so I will back them to do so at a generous price.

Derby County Preview

It is now four games unbeaten for the Rams though three of these have ended in draws. They sit in 13th place though they do have a game in hand of most teams but four of their next five are against teams in the top-half. At the iPro Stadium, they are tough opponents taking ten points from their last four and losing just one of five (against Wolves) this season. Their defence at their own ground is strong having conceded just three times. The East Midlands team are strong starters and if the league was decided on half-time results they would be in fifth place. Around 60% of their goals are grabbed in the first 45% minutes and 87% when looking at the opening hour.

Derby County Team News

Kyle McAllister (groin) and Mason Bennett (knee) are listed day-to-day. Darren Bent (hamstring), Max Lowe (abdominal injury) and Jamie Hanson (calf) are long-term absentees.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

Three defeats from their last four games means the Owls are also in mid-table and sit in 12th on the same points (16) as Derby. Each of their next three is against teams in the bottom-half and Wednesday need to start winning as pressure grows on their manager. Away from Hillsborough, they have won just one of seven in all competitions which came at Fulham. Just one of their six on their travels in the Championship has gone over 2.5 goals with ten netted in total. None of the games the Yorkshire side have played this season have ended goalless with ten of their 12 producing one, two or three goals. Just 31% of their goals have come in the first-half and none in the opening 15 minutes.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Kieran Westwood (rib) is a doubt as is Jordan Rhodes (unknown).
