Derby County vs Sheffield United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This New Year’s Day fixture (15:00) from the iPro Stadium will have implications on the top end of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Derby continued their recent good form with a 2-1 victory away at Portman Road against Ipswich last time out. The Rams took the lead through a Sam Winnall brace and held firm despite home pressure in the second-half. Sheffield United saw their mini-run of form come to an end last time out as they suffered a 1-0 home loss to struggling Bolton. The Blades saw a lot of the ball and created numerous chances but could find no way past stubborn opponents. The reverse fixture came early in the season in August at Bramall Lane in a game the Blades won 3-1. Billy Sharp grabbed a brace on that occasion while Johnny Russell scored an own-goal with Craig Bryson netting a late consolation for the Rams.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The Rams are the most likely winners of the game though the prices on offer reflect this. I think it makes more sense to avoid the match markets and look elsewhere to find the value in this match. In six of their last eight home games and each of their last two Derby have scored two or more goals and they should be backed to do so here. The Blades have shipped two or more in two of their last three on the road. Given that seven of the last 11 the East Midlands outfit have scored have come in the first-half backing them to net before the time of the first team goal which is set at 48:00 looks a solid bet.

Derby County Preview

It is now 16 points from the last 18 on offer for the Rams who are gunning for that second automatic promotion spot. Given how strong a squad they have County are the side I think most likely to go up alongside Wolves. At the iPro Stadium, it is three straight victories, four from their last five and six from their last eight. County have shipped just one goal in their last five in front of their own fans and kept a clean-sheet in eight of their last 11 at home. Four of the last five Derby have played have produced a total of two or three goals. Seven of the last 11 they have netted have come in the first-half with four of their last five coming in the opening 30 minutes.

Derby County Team News

Bradley Johnson (unknown) and Kyle McAllister (groin) are doubts.

Sheffield United Preview

Defeat last time out means it is just one win in eight for the Blades with five of these games ending in a defeat. The Yorkshire side have had a great 2017 with promotion from League One and ending it sixth in the Championship though they will do well to end the season still in the top six. Away from Bramall Lane, it has been a struggle of late with just four points taken from their last five. Six of their last eight on their travels have seen over 2.5 goals with three of the last four going over 3.5 goals. 55% of the league goals Sheffield United have scored this season have come in the first-half with 32% in the opening 30 minutes. Just one of the six clean-sheets they have kept this season have come on the road.

Sheffield United Team News

Cameron Carter Vickers (unknown), David Brooks (virus), Ched Evans (ankle) and Kieron Freeman (dislocated kneecap) are doubts. Paul Coutts is out for the season after breaking his leg.
