Derby County vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture is an all Midlands encounter between two sides in the top ten of the table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Derby stretched their unbeaten league run to five with a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough in a game that saw two own-goals. In midweek, they were in League Cup action against Chelsea which saw Frank Lampard return to Stamford Bridge and they lost 3-2 despite a goal each from Jack Marriott and Martyn Waghorn.

Birmingham made it four straight victories and 11 unbeaten with a 3-1 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday. Connor Mahoney, Lukas Jutkiewicz and Che Adams all grabbed one each to give City a scoreline that flattered them somewhat.

The two meetings between these sides last season saw the Rams continue their good head-to-head record going unbeaten in four with the Blues. City though have lost on just their last five visits to Pride Park.

Betting Tips and Predictions

You could make a case for both these sides on current form with Derby unbeaten in their last six while Birmingham are unbeaten in 11 which includes games against Leeds, Sheffield United, West Brom and Nottingham Forest.

Both teams are in good goalscoring form with the Rams grabbing seven in their last three and the Blues nine in the last four so backing both teams to score and over 2.5 goals makes sense. These two can be backed individually or combined in a double.

Derby County Preview

The Rams have had a tough run of fixtures (they just took seven points from three against fellow top six sides) and still are in sixth. They now face just one top eight side in their next six.

At Pride Park, they are unbeaten in their six previous with three victories and three defeats from these matches. Each of their last three in front of their own fans have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Derby have the joint-sixth best attacking returns with 22 goals and in just one of their last seven have they failed to net. Their defence is joint-sixth highest in the division with 16 conceded though they have gone seven without a clean sheet.

Derby County Team News

George Evans (knee), Joe Ledley (back) and Craig Bryson (calf) are all doubts. Marcus Olsson (cruciate) is a long-term absentee.

Birmingham City Preview

The Blues have taken an impressive 17 of the last 21 points on offer which has moved them up the table into ninth. This is the only one of their next five to come against a team in the top-half.

Away from St Andrew’s, they are unbeaten in five winning two, drawing three and all the results coming against top 16 opponents. Che Adams is a threat on the road with four from his last five away games.

Birmingham are not prolific scorers with just 19 for the season but they have nine in their last four which suggests their attack has improved. At the back they have the fourth best defensive record with just 14 conceded and in just one of their last ten have they conceded more than one.

Birmingham City Team News

Harlee Dean (hip), Jacques Maghoma (ankle) and Isaac Vasselll (thigh) are doubts while David Davis (also ankle) is a long-term absentee.
