Derby County vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) game is an all Midlands battle between two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Derby will look to bounce back after a 4-1 loss at Bristol City in their last league game. It has started so positively with Matej Vydra giving them the lead through the penalty spot but the Robins ran rampant in the second-half. Birmingham suffered a 3-1 home defeat at Preston last time out despite taking a 35th minute lead through Maxime Colin. The game marked the end of the Harry Redknapp era with Lee Carsley taking caretaker charge here with Steve McClaren and Aitor Karanka the names in the mix to takeover. The Rams won both their head-to-head meetings last season coming out on top at Birmingham 2-1 and 1-0 at their own ground. Stephen Gleeson has a decent record in these games scoring two in the last four for the Blues against County.

Betting Tips and Prediction

Derby are the short-priced favourites for the game and given their home form and the visitors poor form in general that seems fair enough. I would advise against backing them though as you just never know how a side will react without their manager and Birmingham do have attacking talent if they can get a formation settled. I like the look of YES in the both teams to score market which might go against recent statistics for the Blues but they do have several attacking options and I think eventually it should click. The Rams for their part have netted seven in their last two at their own ground so they should hold up their end of the bargain. Both teams are fast starters with about 66% of Derby goals coming in the first-half and 75% of Birmingham ones so this game could have early action so I could not put you off backing an early goal. I will take a small interest on the match having a goal in the opening ten minutes.

Derby County Preview

The Rams are in a sequence of winning one, losing one that explains why they sit in 15th place though they do have a game in hand of most teams. Their first seven games have seen them win three, draw one and lose three with a strong split between their form at home and one the road. At home, they have won each of their last two though they did lose their opening one at their ground against Wolves. They have won each of their last two games at their own ground to nil, netting six in the process. Matej Vydra is their leading scorer this season with four league goals three of which have been the opener. 91% of their goals have come in the opening hour and just 9% in the final 30 minutes.

Derby County Team News

Max Lowe (abdominal injury), Kyle McAllister (groin) and Jamie Hanson (calf) are doubts while Darren Bent (hamstring) is ruled out.

Birmingham City Preview

Just four points from their opening eight fixtures means that despite allowing him to bring in many new names that the Blues are once again searching for their fourth manager this year (after Rowett, Zola and Redknapp). They have lost five straight league games and have found the back of the net just two times in these matches. On the road, they have lost each of the four they have played this season netting in just one of these. The goals they have conceded have been split equally with six goals against at home and six on their travels. 75% of their goals they have netted this season have come in the opening half with 25% of these coming in the opening thirty minutes. The average time of the first goal scored is 31st minute and the average time of the first goal conceded is the 34th.

Birmingham City Team News

Carl Jenkinson (dislocated shoulder) is listed day-to-day while Jason Lowe, Che Adams and Jota (all hamstring) are unlikely to play any part.
