CSKA Moscow vs Young Boys Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Young Boys will be looking to overturn a one-goal deficit when they travel to the VEB Arena on Wednesday night to take on CSKA Moscow for the second leg of their Champions League play-off tie. The first leg seemed to be heading for a nil-nil draw, but a bizarre own goal from Nuhu Kasim in the stoppage time gave CSKA Moscow the advantage in this tie. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Although they haven’t been convincing in the first leg, CSKA Moscow are a strong side at home and they should be able to build on their last week’s win over Young Boys. CSKA Moscow have only lost three of their last 15 home fixtures across all competitions, and are currently on a three-game unbeaten home run in the Champions League, including fixtures against Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen.

CSKA Moscow Preview

CSKA Moscow have enjoyed a decent start to their 2017/18 competitive season, as they have only lost two of their ten official fixtures. Those two defeats came at the hands of Lokomotiv Moscow and Rubin Kazan in the Russian Premier League, but CSKA looked pretty solid in their Champions League qualifying campaign. They managed to beat AEK Athens 3-0 on aggregate in the third qualifying round and followed this up with a fortunate victory over Young Boys last week in the first leg of their play-off tie. Although they haven’t scored too many goals in the process, CSKA managed to keep a clean sheet in each of their three Champions League qualifying games so far, so they should feel confident ahead of this second-leg fixture. Their form over the past month has seen them lose just once in eight competitive fixtures and come into this clash on the back of a four-game unbeaten run. CSKA were on a three-game winning streak across all competitions prior to their nil-nil away draw at Ural in the Russian Premier League, although coach Viktor Goncharenko decided to rest several key players for this clash against Young Boys. Domestically, CSKA find themselves in a comfortable 4th spot in the standings, three points off the 2nd-placed and city rivals Lokomotiv Moscow, but already six points behind the current leaders Zenit St. Petersburg.

CSKA Moscow Team News

Aleksandr Makarov is the only doubtful player for CSKA Moscow ahead of this tie.

Young Boys Preview

On the contrary, Young Boys have endured a disappointing run of form recently, winning just once in their last four games across all competitions. They have lost their first-leg clash with CSKA Moscow last week following a terrible own-goal from Nuhu Kasim and then only managed a goalless away draw at Zurich in the Swiss Super League at the weekend. Actually, that was their first home loss in three games against Russian opponents, and the most worrying fact is that they have lost both of their previous games in Russia by two-goal margins. In addition, their away record in the Champions League over the past 13 years has been awful as they have lost six of their seven away games. They were beaten 3-1 on the road at Dynamo Kyiv in the previous Champions League qualifying tie, but have reached this stage of the competition due to the away goal rule as they have won 2-0 at home in the second leg. Young Boys have never reached the Champions League group stage despite the fact that this is their third play-off appearance. The group stage phase is elusive for the Swiss, so it’s safe to say that they should be more than happy with a place into the Europa League group stage.

Young Boys Team News

Gregory Wuthrich is missing through a knee injury ahead of this trip to Russia, while Taulant Sulejmanov got injured a few weeks ago and he is a doubt.
