CSKA Moscow vs Benfica Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

CSKA Moscow are still looking for a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League when they welcome Benfica at the VEB Arena on Wednesday afternoon in the penultimate round of the group A. CSKA Moscow fought back from one-goal down to secure a 1-2 away win at Basel last time out in the Champions League thanks to two second-half goals from Alan Dzagoev and Pontus Wernbloom. On the other hand, Benfica lost 2-0 on the road at Manchester United, in a game in which they had plenty of goalscoring attempts. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview. Feel free to visit our Bet of the day page to check our best daily tips.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Benfica will be playing for pride only and given their current run of form, I’m backing them to score at least one goal. Benfica have netted at least once in 13 of their last 15 away games across all competitions, while CSKA have only scored one goal in their last four home games.

CSKA Moscow Preview

CSKA Moscow have won two and lost two of their four group fixtures, leaving them third in the standings tied on six points with the second-placed Basel. This means that CSKA are in dire need of a victory here before their visit to Old Trafford in the final group fixture. CSKA looked dangerous going forward recently, having scored eight goals in their most recent three games. CSKA have enjoyed a solid Russian Premier League campaign so far as they currently sit third in the standings with 29 points to their name after 17 rounds, just four points behind the second-placed Zenit Petersburg. The bad news is that the Russians have endured a terrible run of form on home soil in the Champions League over the past two years, winning just two of their nine games. In addition, their recent home form has seen them win just once in their last five competitive fixtures. The good news is that CSKA beat Benfica 2-0 in their sole home meeting between these two. Vitinho has been CSKA’s most prolific player in front of goal throughout their Russian Premier League campaign, helping the team with five goals and three assists in his 17 league appearances. However, the 24-year-old striker has only scored once in his eight Champions League appearances this season.

CSKA Moscow Team News

Alexei Berezutski, Figueira Mario Fernandes and Georgi Milanov are all doubts ahead of this clash.

Benfica Preview

Benfica’s recent run of form has seen them win back-to-back games in their domestic competitions, scoring at least two goals in three of these. However, the Portuguese side have been terrible throughout this Champions League campaign, having lost all four group fixtures so far. They hold the both worst attacking and defensive records of the group A, scoring just one goal while conceding ten. Their record in the Champions League over the past year has seen them win just once in eight games. Benfica haven’t played that bad throughout their Primeira Liga campaign as they sit in third spot in the standings, but they are already five points adrift of the current leaders FC Porto. Benfica’s recent away form has seen them lose just once across all competitions, but the bad news is that they have suffered defeats in each of their last three Champions League trips. The only good thing is that Benfica got on the scoresheet at least once in the most recent two meetings with Benfica in the European competitions. However, it has to be said that Benfica are winless in their three meetings with CSKA Moscow, losing twice in the process.

Benfica Team News

Julio Cesar and Mile Svilar are both doubts, but Ruben Dias is out through a stomach injury.
