CSKA Moscow vs Basel Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

CSKA Moscow welcome Basel at the VEB Arena on Wednesday night, with both sides looking for their second victory of their Champions League group stage campaign. CSKA Moscow lost 1-4 at home at the hands of Manchester United last time out, with their consolation goal being scored by Konstantin Kuchaev in the stoppage time. On the contrary, Basel managed an incredible 5-0 home win over Benfica thanks to a brace from Dimitri Oberlin and three other goals from Michael Lang, Blas Miguel Riveros and Ricky van Wolfswinkel. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Basel come into this tie in great shape, but CSKA have been a strong side on home soil over the past three months. Furthermore, CSKA managed some impressive results at home in the Champions League over the past year, drawing 1-1 against Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen and back-to-back wins over Young Boys and AEK Athens. I think that CSKA Moscow will pick up a victory here, but it should be a tight game with few goals scored.

CSKA Moscow Preview

CSKA Moscow’s recent run of form has been a complete mixed bag with two defeats, two draws and two victories in their last six games across all competitions. The Russians suffered a humiliating exit from the Russian Cup a month ago at the hands of Kursk and followed this up with a humiliating 1-4 home loss to Manchester United in the Champions League on matchday two. Actually, they were on a four-game winless streak across all competitions prior to their narrow 0-1 away victory at Krasnodar in the Russian Premier League at the weekend. The only good thing is that CSKA kicked off their Champions League group stage campaign with a hard-fought 1-2 away victory at Benfica a month ago. This leaves them in third in the group A table tied on three points with the second-placed and their Wednesday’s opponents Basel. CSKA should feel confident ahead of this tie as they have won all their previous meetings with Swiss sides. In addition, CSKA were on a four-game unbeaten home streak in the Champions League prior to their 1-4 loss against Manchester United. Furthermore, their recent home form has seen them lose just once in their last five competitive fixtures across all competitions.

CSKA Moscow Team News

Alexander Golovin, Aleksandr Makarov, Vasili Berezutski and Viktor Vasin are all doubts, but Alan Dzagoev is out through an ACL injury.

Basel Preview

Basel, on the other hand, kicked off their Champions League group stage campaign with a heavy 3-0 defeat on the road at Manchester United, but they bounced back emphatically with a 5-0 home victory over Benfica on matchday two. This leaves them in second in the group A table and a victory here could assure them a place in the first knockout stage of the competition. The Swiss have enjoyed a great run of form recently, winning three and drawing once in their last four competitive fixtures. Basel looked incredibly strong at the back during this run, keeping a clean sheet in each of their last four games across all competitions. This is Basel’s eighth group stage campaign and their fourth in five years. They have been much better throughout the current campaign than last year when they finished bottom of their group table with just two points under their belts after six games. The bad news is that Basel’s away form in the competition over the past three years has been terrible as they have only won once in the last eight games and have failed to score in five of these. Ricky van Wolfswinkel has impressed since his arrival this summer as he is currently the Swiss Super League’s topscorer with seven goals and he also managed to get on the scoresheet last time out against Benfica.

Basel Team News

Germano Vailati and Fabian Eder Alvarez Balanta are both doubts, while Ricky van Wolfswinkel is out through injury.
