Crystal Palace vs Southampton Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Crystal Palace host Southampton at Selhurst Park on 16/09/17 in Roy Hodgson’s first game in charge of the Eagles. Frank de Boer saw his brief time in charge at Palace end after the 1-0 defeat at Burnley, while Southampton will also be looking to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat at home to Watford. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Neither team have started the season especially well, with Palace in particular finding it a real struggle early on. With Frank de Boer now gone, I’m expecting their levels to rise, but to get no better result than a draw.

Crystal Palace Preview

Frank de Boer’s reign at Crystal Palace was over before it ever truly began, as four defeats from his opening four Premier League games and unpromising performances left the Dutchman out of work after a short spell for the second time in two seasons. Losing away at Burnley last weekend was the final nail in de Boer’s coffin, although there was little planning he could’ve done to have prevented the goal which defeated them. Chung-Yong Lee’s loose back pass allowed Chris Wood a free run at goal, and Burnley’s new signing calmly slotted past the onrushing Wayne Hennessey. Roy Hodgson is now at the helm and is challenged with the task of overturning a dreadful run of form.  The result continued the downwards trajectory Palace have been on for some time, with their poor form stretching back to last term with Sam Allardyce. Palace have lost eight of their last nine Premier League outings, failing to score in any of the games they have lost as they continue to search for their first goal and points of the season so far.

Crystal Palace Team News

James Tomkins, Ruben Loftus-Cheek (both groin), Wilfried Zaha (knee) and Bakary Sako (calf) are all doubts for the home side, while Connor Wickham (cruciate ligament) is ruled out.

Southampton Preview

It was a case of deja vu for Southampton supporters at the weekend, as their team once again struggled to pose a threat in attack and fell to a disappointing defeat. This time it was Watford who upset the Saints, as Abdoulaye Doucoure scored the opening goal in the 38th minute with an effort from range. Substitute Daryl Janmaat also beat Fraser Forster from outside the area to make it 2-0 and move the Hornets up to 4th in the Premier League table. Southampton meanwhile come into this game 13th, having failed to score in three of their first four league games, as well as drawing a blank when exiting the League Cup at home to Wolves. Mauricio Pellegrino has been unable to overturn much of the problems present during Claude Puel’s single season at St. Mary’s, where they again struggled to score goals, although boasting an impressive defensive record. A distinct lack of flair and creativity appears to be their problem and perhaps a change of system would help freshen things up after sticking with 4-2-3-1 - the same formation that was played last season.

Southampton Team News

Mauricio Pellegrino has a clean bill of health coming into this game, with a fully-fit squad to choose from.
