Crystal Palace vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Crystal Palace host Middlesbrough at Selhurst Park on 25/02/17 in a huge six-pointer between two sides separated by just three points and three places in the Premier League table. Crystal Palace have had a fortnight to prepare for this one but come into the game off the back of a 1-0 loss away to Stoke. Middlesbrough meanwhile were in FA Cup action last time out and overcame League One Oxford 3-2 at the Riverside. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Both teams are in shocking league form at this moment in time, with relegation looking a particularly realistic possibility for both sides. This is undoubtedly a six-pointer and although both teams would ideally win, I can see this one being played out as a draw. Both Allardyce and Karanka need to get points on the board, and as big as three would be for both clubs, I’m expecting their pragmatic approaches to cancel each other out.

Draw - 23/10

Under 2.5 match goals - 1/2

1-1 draw - 6/1

Crystal Palace Preview

Crystal Palace’s rut under Sam Allardyce continued last time out, drawing a blank in front of goal once again as they fell to a 1-0 defeat away at Stoke City. The Potters were much the better side throughout the game, playing on the front foot and were proactive in moving forward and thoroughly deserved the victory. Joe Allen scored the only goal of the game, calmly finishing after excellent hold-up play from Ramadan Sobhi, as Allardyce once again failed to produce a cohesive tune from his players. The Eagles have failed to find the back of the net in four of their last five matches in all competitions, conceding nine times without reply in those games. Looking at the personnel available to Allardyce, it’s surprising to see them struggle so profoundly to keep clean sheets, something the ex-Bolton, Blackburn and England boss has become so renowned for in his career. With the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Andros Townsend and Christian Benteke in attack, it’s also a mystery as to why they simply can’t get going in front of goal; Palace haven’t found the back of the net in seven of their ten matches in 2017. What’s perhaps more alarming is that Palace have lost their last five Premier League games at Selhurst Park, ending up on the losing side on eight occasions in their last nine at home since October 15.

Middlesbrough Preview

Middlesbrough’s clash with Oxford United fitted much of the FA Cup cliches, with the overriding feeling that this was a ‘proper’ cup tie. Grant Leadbitter’s penalty gave the hosts the lead midway through the first half, before Rudy Gestede’s acrobatic volley doubled their lead going into half-time, with the result looking to be a formality from then on in. However, the League One side scored twice in two second-half minutes through Chris Maguire and Toni Martinez to drag themselves back on level terms. Then, a heartbreaker for Oxford, as Christian Stuani scored with just five minutes remaining to see Boro through to the quarter-finals. Only the FA Cup has presented Boro with any kind of joy in recent months, enjoying three home draws against lower-league opposition and now face a quarter-final tie at the Riverside also. In the Premier League, however, they are without a win in their last eight matches and like Palace, they have their issues when it comes to scoring goals. Aitor Karanka’s men have failed to score in seven of their last eleven league games and they are the least prolific team in the Premier League with just nineteen all season. Still without an away win since their opening trip of the season, just avoiding defeat will likely be the priority for the pragmatic Karanka here.
