Crystal Palace vs Manchester City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Crystal Palace welcome Manchester City to Selhurst Park on 28/01/17 as Sam Allardyce looks to secure just his second win as Eagles boss. Palace felt hard done by last time out as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Everton in the closing minutes last time out. City, similarly, were dealt a sucker punch on Saturday as Tottenham snatched a 2-2 draw at the Etihad despite arguably not deserving anything. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Crystal Palace Preview

Crystal Palace’s wait for a league win under Sam Allardyce continued on Saturday with this most recent of defeats condemning them to the relegation zone. In truth, they were second best to Everton for much of the game and strikers Christian Benteke and Loic Remy were disappointing in attack. Allardyce was incensed that play wasn't brought to a halt with new signing Jeff Schlupp down with a knock - hauling himself onto the pitch after the challenge took him behind the line. With Schlupp down at the other end, Tom Davies slipped in Seamus Coleman who made no mistake with his finish, arrowing the ball into the roof of the Palace net. Taking just two points from a possible twenty-four since their last Premier League defeat, Allardyce probably wasn’t the only one fooled into thinking the situation at Palace wasn’t as severe as their league position suggested. Their squad is strong, but this slump has been a year in the making and shaking that sort of mentality is an extremely tough act to perform. It took Palace two ties to overcome League One high-flyers Bolton Wanderers in the third round, highlighting what a real struggle it’s been for them to win football matches. In the league meeting between these two sides, some embarrassing defending saw City come out 2-1 winners, and last season’s runners-up will need to keep a tighter ship than they managed that day.

Manchester City Preview

Despite playing arguably their best ninety minutes of Premier League football in months, Manchester City could only manage a point as they were left feeling frustrated along with a sense of injustice following their drew 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur. City raced into a two-goal lead at the start of the second half as Leroy Sane - with more than a claim that he did so the aid of his hand - and Kevin De Bruyne capitalised on Hugo Lloris errors. Soon after, Dele Alli headed in Kyle Walker’s cross to pull one back for Spurs, with the game’s decisive moment to follow. With Raheem Sterling through on goal, Walker pushed his England teammate off balance, forcing his shot to go straight into the arms of Lloris. Spurs’ captain then rushed the ball upfield allowing Heung-Min Son to equalise just moments later, leaving Pep Guardiola irate at the officials’ ineptitude. With just four points from their last four games, it seems City’s title challenge is now over, making the FA Cup a greater priority than it may initially have been. Guardiola’s trophy-laden career has seen him claim silverware in every season he has competed as a coach, a proud record a serial winner such as himself will be keen to maintain in England. After winning 5-0 in the third round - a cup tie also played in London against West Ham - Guardiola will now be seeking a similar level of performance and efficiency from his squad this time around.

Crystal Palace Team News

Steve Mandanda (knee), Pape Souare (broken leg), Jonathan Benteke (knee) and Connor Wickham (cruciate ligament) are all missing for this one. Both Wilfried Zaha and Bakary Sako remain at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Fraizer Campbell (hamstring) remains doubtful.

Man City Team News

Fernandinho serves the final match of his suspension for this game, while Ilkay Gundogan (cruciate ligament) remains sidelined. Vincent Kompany (knee) has returned to the fold once again and could be involved in this clash.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The enormity of the job Sam Allardyce has at Crystal Palace has been proved by just how abject some of their performances have been in recent weeks. Although Manchester City haven’t been great themselves, there were signs in the draw with Spurs of what this team is capable of on their day and I’m expecting the away side to progress to the fourth round here.
